Message from NETS' Executive Director,
Susan Hipp
Many of us are familiar with the fable of the Tortoise and the Hare, a story sharing the tale of the slow-moving tortoise who steadily plods along in a race against the speedy hare who takes a nap and loses to the tortoise.
I think of those of us in the traffic safety world as being the tortoise ─ slow and steady wins the race. The hare is all the things we are battling against ─ distraction, human behaviors, speeding, impairment, lack of vehicle safety equipment, and inadequate road infrastructure to name a few. But as we plod along, we can make a difference and will eventually win the race.
The latest Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023 from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that global road fatalities have fallen slightly since 2010 to 1.19 million per year. This number is still way too high, but it’s progress in the right direction.
Here at NETS ─ with the help of our Board of Directors, our NETS members, and our valued NETS Sponsors, without whom we could not accomplish what we do ─ we continue to work on moving the needle through private sector engagement in global road safety.
As we head into a new year, NETS reflects on our achievements during the past year working toward this goal:
-
Launched Managing Fatigue for the Fleet Safety Professional
- Updated NETS annual benchmark program questionnaire to reflect current issues affecting member fleets and successfully transitioned to a new Benchmark Project Manager; continued partnership with National Safety Council (NSC) on analytical process
- Instituted NETS’ Road Safety Achievement Award Program and awarded four NETS member companies at the annual conference for outstanding road safety programs and initiatives
- In cooperation with NETS member insurance companies, began working on a “Best in Class” road safety toolkit for small business fleets to be completed in fall 2024
-
Continued NETS podcast, NETSTalk Now, focusing on current road safety issues with subject matter experts
- Hosted NETS Sponsor-led webinars on relevant fleet safety topics
- Continued partnerships with international road safety organizations to increase private sector and NETS member engagement in global road safety initiatives
NETS is excited to continue this momentum into the new year with changes coming soon to our membership offerings in order to expand access to more employers; strengthening partnerships and collaboration with like-minded global road safety organizations to increase international growth; conducting supply chain and 3rd party contractor benchmarking and creating toolkits and guides based on the results; continue offering the Road Safety Achievement award; and completing the small business fleet toolkit.
NETS wishes a safe and Happy New Year to all! And may we continue to be the tortoise, slowly and steadily winning the race to advance road safety and eliminate road deaths and injuries.
