How are you feeling today? Are you tired? Stressed out? On a sugar high from the doughnut you ate for breakfast? Did you know that our mental and physical health can have an impact on how we drive?
According to a 2024 survey1, 93% of respondents said work-related stress has a negative impact on their driving performance.
Everyone knows that keeping up with vehicle maintenance is critical to maintaining the health of our vehicles.
However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is just as important and could have as much influence on our ability to be a safe driver as having a safe vehicle to drive. Your health affects your performance as a driver and driver wellness and safety is critical to preventing crashes.
Ignoring the wellness of your drivers may increase their risk of being in a crash.
Employers can have an impact on driver wellness by:
- Developing a workplace wellness plan that addresses both physical and mental health
- Providing healthy snacks throughout the workplace
- Leading by example and asking senior executives to provide support and promotion of wellness activities
- Incorporating fatigue management systems into fleet safety policies and programs to address drowsy driving
- Creating policies and giving assistance to address drug and alcohol use and impairment
- Providing support for work-life balance to reduce employees’ stress and prevent burnout
