Summaries of timely road safety news, events, and alerts

Message from NETS' Executive Director,

Susan Hipp

Thanksgiving is this week in the U.S. It’s a time to be thankful and celebrate with family, friends, and neighbors. It’s a time to laugh and reminisce and fill ourselves with turkey and stuffing and pumpkin pie.

When I was a child, my mom made a pumpkin pie, covered it in Saran Wrap, set it on the floor of the backseat of the car to take to a friend’s Thanksgiving gathering, and warned my sister and me not to step on it when we got in the car. It was inevitable something would happen to it- my sister stepped on it and left a boot imprint under the Saran Wrap. My mom took the pie to the gathering anyway, boot print and all. We still laugh about it to this day, and I’m thankful for the memory, especially now that my mom is no longer with us, and thankful for family with whom I can share the memory.

As we all reflect on what we’re thankful for this season, road safety deserves a place on that list. Every safe trip home, every prevented crash, every driver who feels supported and prepared—these are wins worth celebrating. And what makes road safety truly meaningful is that it isn’t passive. It’s something we build together through the choices we make, the standards we uphold, and the care we show for the people who turn the wheels of our organizations.

Fleet safety isn’t just a policy area or a compliance requirement—it’s a chance to protect lives in a very real and measurable way. Whether we’re improving training, maintaining vehicles more intentionally, analyzing data, or simply encouraging a culture of alertness and responsibility, each action creates a ripple effect. Those ripples can extend far beyond the workplace to families, communities, and future generations.

This season, let’s be grateful not only for the progress we’ve made, but also for the opportunity to continue making a difference. By staying engaged, informed, and committed to safety, we help ensure that more people arrive home safely every day.

And more than a pumpkin pie with a boot print, that is something truly worth giving thanks for.

Drive safely!

NETS ANNOUNCEMENTS

NETS Releases Significant Update to Post-Incident Coaching Toolkit: New Focus on Driver Behavior and Root-Cause Analysis

“This revision reflects NETS’ commitment to advancing road safety by focusing on the human factors that influence driving behavior. When managers understand the ‘why’ behind a collision, they can help drivers make safer choices and identify where company practices may need adjustment.” ~Susan Hipp, NETS Executive Director

(NETS) has released a revised “Post-Incident Coaching Toolkit” that shifts its focus to driver behavior and root-cause analysis, offering fleet managers a structured three-step framework (What happened, Why it happened, What will change) and expanded scenario templates to strengthen coaching practices and safety culture. Developed with guidance from NETS Board members Cintas and Chubb Insurance and NETS sponsor ABA Technologies, this member-only benefit is available now for download on the NETS website.

How Near-Miss Data is Revolutionizing Road Safety

Near-miss data—when two road users narrowly avoid a collision—is proving to be a more proactive and powerful safety tool than crash records. Traffic managers are using these close-call events to identify high-risk locations, take preventive action and improve road safety before serious incidents occur.

Collision Course: Why You Can't Afford to Overlook Driver Mental Health

Driver mental health is a critical but often overlooked factor in fleet safety, directly influencing reaction time, risk-taking, and overall performance. Supporting drivers’ emotional well-being is essential for reducing collisions, improving productivity, and retaining skilled employees.

From Ratings to Reality: Why Your Fleet Safety Policy Needs a Different Focus - Fleet Auto News

A fleet’s safety policy must move beyond simply requiring a “five-star” rating and instead assess the specific vehicle variant’s features, how they protect vulnerable road users, and whether aftermarket modifications compromise that protection.

The Female Crash Test Dummy Has Been a Long Time Coming - But She Isn't Here Yet

Women are significantly more likely than men to suffer serious injury or death in vehicle crashes, in part because testing has long relied on male-modeled dummies. A new advanced female crash-test dummy designed to better reflect female anatomy has been officially endorsed, representing a major step toward closing that safety disparity.

ROADWAY DESIGN AND SAFETY INNOVATIONS

Blue Lanes May Hit U.S. Roads - Cars Banned and Drivers Must Stop Instantly

Several U.S. states are considering “Blue Lanes,” a road design already used in the U.K. and other regions to clearly separate bicycle and pedestrian paths from vehicle traffic. Inspired by these international models, the approach aims to improve visibility, reduce collisions with vulnerable road users and create safer, more predictable shared-road environments.
