Message from NETS' Executive Director,
Susan Gillies-Hipp
When I was growing up, there was an annual carnival that came to town and set up in Johnny Appleseed Park just down the road from me. I looked forward to it every year and loved the game booths, the rides and especially the elephant ear at the food booth (which, for those not familiar, is the deep-fried deliciousness of flattened dough covered in melted butter and cinnamon sugar.)
My favorite ride however was the Tilt-A-Whirl. This ride consists of dome-shaped cars spinning around a platform that raises and lowers. The resulting centrifugal and gravitational forces on the revolving cars causes them to spin in different directions and at variable speeds. The more friends you piled into a car, the faster it could spin and the more you got thrown by force to the side of the car as it moved around the track.
The momentum from the ride was enough to cause a dizzying, sideways walk for a few moments when you descended, but we kept going back for more.
|
Presentations included topics such as how losing a loved one led to the creation of a distracted driving foundation working towards eliminating distracted driving; the state of road safety in the U.S.; case studies from NTSB; the latest in autonomous vehicle and EV safety technology; highlights and resources from global road safety organizations such as iRAP and UNRSF; and best practices shared from NETS members and Sponsors.
As the conference came to a close, I issued a challenge to all attendees: to walk out the conference room door, or to log off the virtual session, and continue the momentum we had begun during the conference. The conversations we had between sessions, the messages we shared, and the lessons we walked away with shouldn't end when the conference ends. Even if you weren't able to attend the conference, I invite you to take advantage of the many NETS fleet safety resources, i ncluding our recently launched annual Benchmark Report, to help advance your road safety program. Reach out to our NETS Sponsors and learn about the products and services they offer which can help improve fleet safety. Keep the conversations going and continue sharing resources and best practices.
Even when the ride is over, don't lose the momentum: keep going back for more.
Safe driving!

SOBRsafe’s mission is to save lives and create safer work environments.
The annual cost of alcohol abuse in the U.S. is $249 billion. Nearly half of all industrial accidents with injuries are alcohol-related, and 1-in-10 U.S. commercial drivers test positive for alcohol (the highest rate worldwide).
In response, SOBRsafe has developed an instantaneous and hygienic alcohol screening technology that integrates seamlessly with driver check-in/out processes. The employee simply places two fingers on the device, and within ten seconds, their identity is verified and the alcohol test complete. All scans are reported in real-time to a secure cloud-based portal, and supervisors are immediately notified via SMS and email if alcohol has been detected.
This comprehensive, uniform testing is allowing SOBRsafe customers to enhance their safety, reduce insurance premiums by up to 25%, and create a culture of prevention.
