Message from NETS' Executive Director,
Susan Hipp
A few years ago, my son participated in Tae Kwon Do. For several years he consistently went to classes, earning new belts as he improved his skills and learned more. He was headed toward a black belt. But the closer he got to earning that belt, the more worn out and tired he got of going to class and doing it all over again. He had lost the passion. We talked about it and weighed the options, and he ended up sticking with it. He continued to work hard and finally tested for his black belt, earning it with pride and a great sense of accomplishment.
But what has he done with it since then? He quit the day he got the belt. Could he fight off an attacker today if he had to? Would he remember the skills he learned and put them to use, or would his mind go blank and let fear take over? Hopefully he'll never have to find out.
But what happens next for those who attended the conference? Are you worn out? Have you lost the passion already? Or will you continue to put your newly learned skills to use in your fleet safety program?
Our conference presenters shared information on leadership, changing behavior using positive reinforcement, the challenges and lessons learned in implementing a strong fleet safety program, an EV workshop addressing many of the questions about safely implementing EVs into your fleet, how to address risk and liability in your fleet including your incidental fleet, as well as numerous best practice case studies from our member/Sponsor partners.
Even if you didn't attend the conference, I urge you to continue to find new and meaningful ways to implement strong safety cultures within your organization in order to keep drivers safe. Even when you're worn out. Even when you feel like you're fighting a battle.
NETS has multiple resources you can put to use in your fleet safety program. And conference attendees and all NETS members can download the conference presentations for up to 90 days post conference from the conference platform, Whova.
Our fleet safety journey is never done. Reach out to other fleet safety professionals. Find new resources. Connect with a NETS Sponsor company to learn how they can help your program.
Keep going, even after you've earned that black belt.
Until then, safe driving!
