A Message for our Members, Candidates, and Students
|
|
Greetings!
We wanted to take this opportunity to update you on what is happening with our Society. For the foreseeable future, we are postponing all local events.
The June 2020 exam administration has been postponed
. We recognize that this is a challenging time for everyone involved, and we promise to pass along any developing information.
We take the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) seriously. Our board members, contractors, and volunteers are working remotely, and we also remain in regular communication with the CFA Institute.
In the meantime, there is a wealth of online content accessible to members. We hope that this newsletter provides some informative, and enjoyable, content in the interim. We plan to continue our monthly newsletter as well as send out any other timely announcements.
We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Sincerely,
The CFA Society Buffalo team

Our first social event of the new year was a hit! Members, candidates, and board members had a chance to mingle and meet over cocktails at Hartman's Distilling Co.
Thank you all who attended and helped make it a success!

Investment Research Challenge Update

Congratulations to
Canisius College
for winning the regional IRC competition and advancing to nationals! While the national and global competition has been moved to an electronic format, we wish the the best of luck in the next round!
Syracuse University hosted the regional competition for Western and Central New York on their gorgeous campus! A total of 11 schools competed in this year's regional competition! See below for a unique perspective from a first-time judge this year, and also ways that you can get involved in 2021!

Rebecca Bish
, CFA Society Buffalo's Employer Relation's Chair,
shares her experience as a first time judge!

On February 27
th
, eleven Universities competed at Syracuse University for the WNY regional CFA Institute Challenge. The teams in this global competition research and analyze a publicly traded company, write and present a research report with a buy, sell or hold recommendation.
As a judge, I followed a scoring rubric and ranked the team’s presentations. The students gave pitches as sell side analysts. The students were engaged, professional, and confident. I secretly rooted for each team as they presented. I asked myself: How compelling was their story? Did it support their recommendation? How comprehensive was their financial analysis and valuation? Was it logical? How was the quality of the presentation? Could they answer pointed questions? After individually scoring, fellow bracket judges compared notes, rankings, and had consensus. All the schools put together tremendous efforts.
After lunch, the winner from each bracket was announced: Canisius and SUNY Oswego. These teams gave their pitch to a new panel of judges. Canisius won the Challenge and will represent WNY in the America’s Regional Competition in New York City. On behalf of my fellow judges, our best wishes to Canisius!

My favorite sport is football and my favorite team is the Bills (of course!). I also like to ski, travel, read, and spend time with family and friends.

:I would spend all day chasing my son William around.
Favorite thing about the job you have now:
The creative flexibility to tactically invest globally
Favorite place to vacation:
My favorite vacation spot of all-time would have to be Positano, Italy on the Amalfi Coast... but more realistically speaking, the Finger Lakes especially Keuka Lake
