THE LATEST FROM THE NAIROBI WORK PROGRAMME
The NWP has made progress since SBSTA 48 from advancing adaptation knowledge across thematic areas like human settlements to facilitating innovative partnerships under the Lima Adaptation Knowledge Initiative (LAKI). Read the annual report to learn more and the indicative workplan for 2019-2020 included in this report to see what we have planned for this and next year. If you are interested in engaging with the NWP, please send your feedback by email at nwp@unfccc.int
How does the NWP close knowledge gaps to advance transformative adaptation in a changing climate? How does the NWP support Parties under the Convention, what thematic areas do we prioritize and what exactly is our knowledge-to-action methodology? Find all your questions answered in the NWP’s newest multimedia, digital summary brief – another example of how we’re adopting innovative, user friendly knowledge-sharing approaches.
In collaboration with the LEG at the 2019 NAP Expo, the NWP co-organized a technical session, Assessing progress in adaptation in vulnerable groups, communities and ecosystems , that focused on developing metrics to measure adaptive capacity, resilience to climate change impacts and vulnerability. Participants explored practical steps that they can take to use monitoring and evaluation systems in the formulation and implementation of NAPs as well as what specific challenges the countries face in assessing adaptation progress.

Moving forward with inputs from Parties and partners, the LEG and the NWP are now working together to develop indicators that will help countries identify vulnerable groups, communities and ecosystems, the climate risks they face, adaptation measures currently being implemented as well as progress made in reducing these vulnerabilities.
Researchers from the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability partnered with local scientists and adaptation practitioners to close priority knowledge gaps for Indian Ocean island countries. The capstone project evaluated sea level rise and storm surge impacts on the Seychelles’ critical infrastructure – findings that the researchers shared during SBSTA 50 negotiations on the NWP, at the Expert Dialogue on Technologies for Averting and Addressing Loss and Damage in Coastal Zones and during the poster session of the Eleventh Meeting of the Research Dialogue
In collaboration with its partners under the LAKI, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) identified eight interventions – from developing a drought and precipitation index to adopting flood-resilient housing – to close five priority knowledge gaps in the Hindu Kush Himalayan sub-region. ICIMOD, for example, has since coordinated capacity-building trainings on watershed conservation in Nepal, piloted flood-resilient, ecological sanitation toilets in India and strengthened community-based flood early warning systems across river tributaries in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan.
INSIGHTS FROM THE UNFCCC ADAPTATION PROGRAMME
At the intersessional negotiations in Bonn, Germany, the AC hosted the 2019 Technical Expert Meeting on Adaptation , with a focus on adaptation finance, including private sector funding. Leading authorities on adaptation, finance and technology from around the world discussed a range of topics under the umbrella of adaptation finance, from using adaptation planning to maximize finance to commercializing adaptation technology solutions to engaging the private sector in financing adaptation action. Learn more , and watch two Facebook live sessions here  and  here for a snapshot of the meeting. A summary for policymakers and a technical paper will be available in the coming months.
The Task Force on Displacement (TFD) developed a new workplan in July 2019, delivering on the COP24 decision to expand the TFD’s activities as well as extend its focus areas to topics like youth engagement. This workplan will help support the work of the Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage, catalyzing much-needed research, action and support on human mobility challenges in a changing climate. Learn more.
The membership of the Facilitative Working Group (FWG) of the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP) consists of both representatives from indigenous communities and governments, held its first meeting in conjunction with SBSTA 50 . The FWG drafted a proposed initial two-year workplan . A thematic workshop held under the LCIPP focused on enhancing the participation of local communities, in addition to indigenous peoples, in the LCIPP. Learn more.

Three informal dialogues were also held under the LCIPP during the SB 50 session. These focused on building synergies, building partnerships, and conceptualizing the dedicated LCIPP web portal. Learn more .

In the run-up to COP 25, the FWG will meet for the second time, from November 28-30, 2019 in Santiago de Chile. Learn more .
Watch this  short video  from Resilience Frontiers 2019, the disruptive brainstorming conference that gathered 100 visionary thinkers and thought leaders during the Korea Global Adaptation Week. Using strategic foresight methods, participants envisioned the future of resilience under the impact of the fourth industrial revolution and emerging social trends towards sustainability. The conference’s summary of outcomes provides further information about the transformative and regenerative resilience vision co-created during the event as well as outlines the cross-cutting objectives and possible pathways to achieve such a vision. Resilience Frontiers  is a NWP  joint-action pledge .
Solid scientific knowledge must form the basis for the ambitious climate action the world urgently needs. Hosted during the 2019 Bonn Climate Change Conference, the Eleventh Meeting of the Research Dialogue gathered experts from the scientific community alongside Party and non-Party representatives to discuss the latest science informing transformative change in energy systems and climate resilient developments. The outcomes from this annual forum will guide research efforts and science-driven policy goals as well as strengthen scientific support to relevant workstreams under the Convention, including the NWP. The research dialogue facilitator, Sheila Ochugboju, and four of our speakers also took part in a live all-female panel discussion on  Transformative Adaptation and Climate Resilient Development .
OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE WITH THE NWP
Prioritizing Oceans, Coastal Areas and Ecosystems
Calling all Parties and partners with expertise on oceans, coastal areas and ecosystems, including but not limited to mega deltas, coral reefs, mangroves and slow onset events! The NWP will begin building a new partnership to provide expert guidance, following our knowledge-to-action methodology, on this thematic area, while also organizing the 13 th Annual NWP Focal Point Forum on oceans in conjunction with COP25 in Chile. Learn more.
Interested in engaging with this thematic work? Please contact the NWP team via email at nwp@unfccc.int
Following the AC’s recommendation, the COP invites Parties, NWP partners and other organizations to share case studies of initiatives that focus on ecosystems and adaptation planning for vulnerable communities and groups as agents of change. Submit your case studies for dissemination on the Adaptation Knowledge Portal by October 31, 2019. Learn more.
At its 48 th session, the SBSTA invited NWP partners and other organizations to compile and disseminate information on monitoring tools and assessment methods to assist Parties, particularly developing country partners, with: 1) methods, tools, data, observations and systems for economic, ecosystem and climate modeling and scenarios, inter alia, related to vulnerability and climate risk assessment; and 2) mobilization of knowledge resources in collaboration with relevant organizations. Send your submissions to the NWP by October 31, 2019. Learn more
Are NWP Knowledge Products Accessible, Applicable and Clear?
Do you have experience using NWP knowledge products such as technical papers or synthesis of case studies and good practices? We want to improve these produ cts for our knowledge users. As mandated by the Parties at SBSTA 50, we are currently developing a survey to solicit your feedback on the content, packaging and dissemination of these resources. The survey will be shared with you soon! Please stay tuned and participate - We require your feedback to improve NWP knowledge products!
WELCOME NEW NWP PARTNERS
