Dear SPS Project Managers and Quality Leaders:

SPS is excited to announce that hospitals can now view their 12-month rolling SSER rate chart on the SPS Data Platform. The chart displaying the SSER per 10,000 adjusted patient days metric is available today, Feb. 14. We encourage you to utilize this chart to better understand your SSER trends and the impact of your improvement work.

Please click here to reference the SSER Data Guide when reviewing your center's chart.

SPS is a network built on the fundamental principles of transparency, All Teach/All Learn, and the refusal to compete on safety; all of which must be balanced in our work. In alignment with this philosophy, the hospital-level rolling rate SSER charts do not include a network centerline. While the SSER charts will not have a network centerline, network progress continues to be measured by the percent reduction in the network SSER.

The Serious Safety Event Rate (SSER) Network goals are to:

  1. Establish a Baseline SSER for the SPS network and then,
  2. Reduce the network Baseline SSER by 30% by Dec. 31, 2024.

A 12-month rolling rate is used because the SSEs reported are rare events. The network SSER baseline rate will be calculated using data from Jan. to Dec. 2021 and will be used in determining the 30% reduction at the network level.
