Winter Kayaking & Birding Tours
with David Wimpfheimer: Sundays December 29, 2013 and January 19, 2014

Over 400 species of birds have been recorded here in the Point Reyes area, making it one of the bird watching havens in the country. Fall and winter are great times to bird watch from a kayak in Tomales Bay. The mild weather conditions bring in thousands of birds. Paddling over eelgrass beds with our naturalist guides, you will see and learn about migrating birds, marine animals and other species which live below and above the water's surface. This tour is for those who love to watch and ID birds as well as those with a curiosity for what makes Tomales Bay such a unique ecosystem.

Those of you who have been on a tour with David Wimpfheimer know what a special event this is.  David is a biologist, professional natu
ralist and guide with a passion for birds and the natural history of the West. Since the mid-1980s, David has shared a great deal of information about all aspects of the natural world with hundreds of groups.

David's seasoned focus and knowledge, make for an enjoyable and educational outing. Along with the intended, nature's unpredictability might present you with the unexpected excitement of a unique bird behavior; or a mammalian critter, such as a hunting bobcat or meandering coyote. Lizards, butterflies, trees, lichen, fungi and even paw prints may be in your path. With David's patient guidance, you will receive many views and explanations for all these outdoor wonders.

David's nature excursions are from a generalist's point of view. Even though David is most passionate about birds and the majority of his excursions are geared toward teaching and interpreting the language of the avian world; he is just as comfortable and enthusiastic teaching about all the wonders of nature."

NEW: Introduction to Sea Kayaking
(Skills Class Level .5)

This course is a shorter version of our "Sea Kayaking Basics" class, designed for the students who are not yet interested in getting certified to rent closed deck kayaks, or maybe just aren't quite ready to get in the water and wrestle with the rescues portion of our "SKB".

This class can be taught in Open Deck, Closed Deck, Single, or Double Kayaks.  (Depending on what you are interested in using for your future kayak career.)  We will go over different styles of kayaks/ gear, correct paddling technique, and introduce you to tides, currents, and winds as they relate to kayaking.

The first hour of this class is land based, and the other 3 hours are spent learning as you paddle along the beautiful coastline of the Tomales Bay State Park or the Point Reyes National Seashore.  (The venue for each class will be wind, weather, and tide dependent.)

This is a great starting course for anyone that is new to kayaking.  There are no prerequisites to this class, other than an interest in kayaking.  To learn sea kayaking recoveries and to become certified to rent closed-deck kayaks, take the next course: Sea Kayaking Basics (Skills Class Level I)

Dates & Times: Every Saturday, 10am - 2pm

Location: Blue Waters Marshall or Inverness
Fee: $88
