MONTEGRAPPA ALCHEMIST FOUNTAIN PEN & ROLLERBALL

MONTEGRAPPA ALCHEMIST "AIR" STERLING SILVER LIMITED EDITION FOUNTAIN PEN FINE NIB - YOUR PRICE $7,995 (RETAIL $10,000)

It is one of the most widely-read and deeply-loved books of all time, a small tome that has affected lives around the world. Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist is an adventure and a parable, an allegorical tale in the tradition of the great picaresque novels of the Iberian Peninsula. It is fitting that The Alchemist is a part of that noble genre, for the Brazilian author wrote this modern classic in Portuguese, and the story commences in Andalusia.

The language of alchemy was, by its own very nature, obscure and expressed in symbols that represented concepts deriving from laboratory work, reflections and deeply spiritual experiences. An alchemist was often also a philosopher, theologian, physician, astrologer and astronomer, and a mathematician.

Montegrappa has conceived a pen that, in a symbolic and historical language, could represent knowledge and man's search for a particular ability deemed fundamental: the ability to manipulate the elements, the liberation and transformation of metals, the study of nature, the parallel discovery of the secret of long life. Its designers have traveled back in time to the late Middle Ages, to illuminate a concept and practice that deeply motivated the scientific development of humanity.

The Alchemist Pen will be issued in an edition of 1987 fountain pens and roller balls in total, in honour of the year that it was published. The series will consist of 71 in solid gold (38 fountain pens and 33 roller balls), for the 71 languages into which it has been translated. 900 pens will be offered in resin and sterling silver (450 fountain pens and 450 roller balls) to represent the number of copies in the first edition's print run. A further 1000 pens will be produced entirely in sterling silver with accents in translucent enamel. There will be four colours of enamel, representing the four elements: air, fire, earth and water. Only 125 fountain pens and 125 roller balls will be made in each colour. Lastly, 16 pens (8 fountain pens and 8 roller balls) will be produced in gold with diamond enhancements, these precious gems symbolising the riches that feature prominently in the saga.

MONTEGRAPPA BRAIN LIMITED EDITION FOUNTAIN PEN & ROLLERBALL

MONTEGRAPPA BRAIN LIMITED EDITION FOUNTAIN PEN FINE NIB - YOUR PRICE $4,100 (RETAIL $5,200)

MONTEGRAPPA BRAIN LIMITED EDITION ROLLERBALL PEN - YOUR PRICE $3,650 (RETAIL $4,300)

Working with no less an authority on cerebral matters than Dr. Richard Restak, M.D., Montegrappa is proud to announce one of the most ambitious pens in its illustrious history. The Brain Pen is the result of extensive collaboration with Dr. Restak, the author of more than 20 books on the subject.Among his many positions are those of Clinical Professor of Neurology at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and residencies at Mount Sinai Hospital, Georgetown University Hospital and George Washington Hospital.

To create a pen that represents the complexities of the very organ it celebrates, Montegrappa's designers drew inspiration from the brain itself. The link between the brain and the pen, with the act and art of writing serving as an extension of man's ability to express himself while exercising thebrain itself, encouraged Montegrappa to illustrate this direct intellectual and physical connection.

Emblematic of this is the contrast present in the pen's most basic structural elements: the top part of the pen is rich and elaborate, while the body is simple, acting as a parallel to a man's body, where all his riches are in the brain.
Adorning the top of cap is a cross-section of the brain, based on an ancient illustration. The cap features an overlay made up of neurons, with the pocket clip representing the spinal cord. The clip has a spring-loaded mechanism and its tip is lacquered in red or black, to differentiate the fountain pen from the roller ball.

Etched into the nib is the image of a sea-horse. This refers to the hippocampus, which is a major component of the brain of humans and other vertebrates. It belongs to the limbic system and plays an important role in the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory and spatial navigation.

Your Brain Pen will be offered as a limited edition consisting of:

1012 silver fountain pens, a quantity representing the number of neurons in the human brain, which are estimated to be between 10 raised to the 12th power or 10 raised to the 13th power;

900 silver roller ball pens, as the number of neurotransmitter (messenger) molecules released by a single synaptic vesicle is 900;

50 solid 18K gold fountain pens, as the diameter of a synaptic vesicle is 50 nanometers;

50 solid 18K gold roller ball pens, also representing the diameter of a synaptic vesicle of 50 nanometers;

12 solid 18K gold fountain pens with diamonds, representing the 12 cranial nerves;

6 solid 18K gold roller balls with diamonds, representing the 6 cortical layers.

Accompanying every Brain Pen is a copy of a book written especially for Montegrappa by Dr. Restak.
