Hello there!

This is Carla, the instructor of the new online Beginner's Sewing Course at G Street Fabrics. Thank you for signing up for our newsletter and taking an interest in our new Online Education Department!

I am thrilled to announce that our first online sewing course is live. You can access it any time, anywhere, and take the course at any pace you wish.

I have been sewing for over 18 years, and I am still learning new techniques to this day to improve my sewing skills, but one thing is for sure, learning the fundamentals of sewing helped me build up my skills. This is why I designed this course with the complete beginner in mind to guide you on techniques, tips, and tricks that every new sewist needs to learn.

From hand-sewing, operating and caring for a machine, understanding fabric properties and knowing the right notions to use per fabric, and learning basic seams, seam finishes, and fastenings. Most of all, learn how to read a commercial sewing pattern. You can sew any sewing project your heart desires by knowing how to navigate through commercial sewing pattern instructions.

I know what you're thinking, though, "but it's online, and it's a tangible skill that needs to be taught in person"!

I won't deny that there are advantages to learning in person, but there are advantages to learning how to sew online.

  • Accessibility of Time and Place. I've mentioned this above, but that is one of the key advantages of learning online. It allows you to attend class anywhere without hauling your sewing machine and tools around. You are not a slave to time either; you can play the course player while making dinner and rewatch it later. If you're a parent, you won't need to hire a babysitter to look after the kids. You can also be anywhere around the world and not have to commute to a certain location.

  • Affordability. Most in-person beginner's sewing classes can range from $150 to $500 and run approximately 2 to 6 hours maximum. Information is jam-packed into that limited amount of time, and for some students, it may be challenging to retain all that information learned. With this online course priced at $249, accessible for one year, and with over 10 hours of video content, you can watch and review it as many times as possible to understand the techniques taught. In the long run, it makes it more affordable.

  • Suits a Variety of Learning Styles. Not only do I teach with step-by-step video tutorials that cater to the visual and audio learners, but I also make sure that there is written content for the reading learners too. Though I, myself, am a kinesthetic learner, I learn by doing. This online course offers exercises to help build your sewing skills, one chapter at a time. I also like to learn by repetition - with these skill-building exercises, the more you use these techniques, the better it sticks. With sewing, it's all about building good habits.

  • Less Distractions/Control Your Information Intake. If you are serious about learning a new skill, sometimes the fewer distractions, the better. Okay, since you're already online, you're more likely to go on social media if the course starts to trail off, but you can decide how long your classes run to suit your attention span. For instance, you will not be able to hold my attention for more than 45 minutes. After that, my eyes start to glaze over. So, I would set a timer for 45 minutes to go through the course in chunks and have 10-15 minute breaks in between. During those 45 minutes, I will have all my device notifications set to silent. I'll take about 3 hours off my weekend to cover one chapter. Online learning allows you to control how much information you want to gather without feeling defeated.
Learning a new skill can be overwhelming and frustrating, but online learning allows you to set your pace. Granted, you will also make many mistakes, but don't let that discourage you. Mistakes are just another form of learning by knowing how not to do something. Even if I've been sewing for several years, I still make silly mistakes. I even capture them on camera, and I make a point of not editing them out. Why? Because when the same mishap occurs to you, you'll know how to problem solve your way out.
But if you need support and direct guidance, there are allocated Discussion panels throughout the course player where you can leave notes or ask questions. If you need feedback on an exercise, you're welcome to upload a photo of your work, and I can share information on how to improve, what you've done well, or offer constructive criticism and encouragement. You can even share your sewing wins with the rest of the class and me!

Need accountability in taking a course online? I'll send you weekly reminders via email to ensure you're on track. Alternatively, you can also follow @GStreetFabrics. (And I'll be able to tell you off for being on social media and neglecting to do your sewing exercises! Kidding.) Be sure to tag #gstreetfabricseducation while you're there.

Lastly, I want to let you know the purpose of this newsletter. It's not to send promotional content for this course every week. I want to provide you with free sewing educational content to complement your learning journey and empower you to sew.

Thank you once again for your interest in G Street Fabric Education. I look forward to you joining the course!

See you online,

Carla.
