Community First, since 1959, has been Doing Good!
2020 Teachers-of-the-Year
Community First was founded by local teachers in 1959. We’ve never forgotten our roots.

To that end, we offer special loans to intern teachers to fast-track them into the education profession. We have done more than 300 in-class financial literacy presentations. And we sponsor teacher-of-the-year awards in four of the five counties we serve.

On October 14th, Community First had the honor of bestowing the Sonoma County teacher of the year award to Ross Hause of Luther Burbank Elementary and the finalist award to Nhung Luong of JX Wilson Elementary, both in Santa Rosa. On the same day, we honored Lake County teacher of the year Amanda Laughner of Upper Lake High School.

Community First provided no-strings-attached cash awards to each of these outstanding teachers. They represent the very best in their profession.
CFCU Helps Holiday Magic for Kids
2020 has been a hard year for many, and as we approach the holiday season we want to make sure our local children will feel the magic of the holiday spirit.

We’ve partnered with Toys for Tots of Sonoma County as a toy drop off location. Now through December 7th, we are collecting toys at our five Sonoma County branches: Guerneville, Healdsburg, Santa Rosa (central and west), and Sebastopol.

We will also be collecting toys In Lake, Marin, Mendocino, and Napa counties, but that will begin closer to mid-November. Once we’re set up in those branches, we will notify CFCU Members via our website and Facebook.
Your Finances at your Fingertips
We love assisting our Members in person, but now more than ever, banking from the comfort of your home, or anywhere for that matter, is much more convenient and safer.

Banking via desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone has never been easier. You can view your transaction history (no need to wait for your monthly statement), transfer funds between accounts and to other Members, schedule payments (no more late fees!), deposit checks via smartphone and much more.

On top of all the essential banking services, we’re also the ONLY LOCAL bank or credit union with contactless debit cards. Meaning, you can now tap to pay with your debit card or smartphone.

When your CFCU debit card is up for renewal, it will be replaced with the additional contactless feature. If you’d like one sooner, you can now log on to online banking, click account, card services, and request a new card. Within 10 days you’ll have a new contactless debit card! How easy is that?

Tips for Avoiding Scams at the Holidays
As people gear up for holiday shopping season, scammers are also gearing up to get a hold of your money. Here are some tips to help you avoid those Scroogey scammers and how to donate safely.

Shopping online? Pay by credit card. Credit cards give you extra protection for online purchases and many cards offer benefits, like protection for returns and purchases. If an unauthorized charge pops up on your statement, you can easily dispute. Credit card protection varies, so check with your issuer to understand all your card’s protections. And remember, Community First offers a trio of credit cards through VISA. Stop by a branch today and sign up.

Buy gift cards for gifts, not for payments.  Gift cards are the best gift when you don’t know what to get someone. But they’re also a scammer’s favorite way to steal your money. Anyone who contacts you and demands you pay them with a gift card, for any reason, is always a scammer. There is no protection on gift cards, meaning once your money is gone, it’s gone.

Research charities before you donate. The holidays bring out our generous spirit, ‘tis the season for giving. When donating, be sure it goes where you intend it to, and not to the hands of a scammer. If someone calls, asking to give to a charity, don’t let them rush you into donating. Instead, research the charity, and contact them directly to make sure your donation goes to the right hands.
