UPCOMING FILMING EVENT
PRESENTED BY GORDON NEUFELD, PH.D.
LIVESTREAM SEMINAR
SATURDAY, JULY 25, 2020 | 9 AM to 4 PM PDT
$90 PER PERSON
A NOTE FROM GORDON :
I am thoroughly engaged in putting the final touches to the upcoming seminar on empathy, scheduled to be filmed in three weeks. This will be the third Saturday seminar that we are doing in this format, livestreamed from our basement studio. It strikes me that all three seminars are about feelings in some way, which makes perfect sense to me in retrospect.
The first seminar,
Keeping Children Safe in a Wounding World
,
was about hurt feelings; the second seminar, Reaching Troubled Kids
,
was on missing feelings; and this third seminar, The Natural Roots of Empathy,
is on the pivotal role of feelings in developing human virtues. All three angles on feelings seem necessary to get the whole picture and what an amazing picture it is. There is no doubt that feelings are what make us fully human and humane – a revelation that counters and corrects over four centuries of thinking about feeling that still persists in the major working paradigms of the day.
Back to empathy. We all want our children to be kind and considerate, sensitive to the needs of others. But how do we get there? Is it a matter of inculcating values? training social skills?

NEW EDITORIAL
BY LISA WEINER
If one were trying to create a recipe for frustration, these past few months would be the winning combination. Frustration is one of our primary mammalian emotions and
it arises when things are not going the way we want them to.
Not being able to move about the world as we are used to doing?
Frustrating!
Having to do schoolwork all day at home?
Frustrating!
Not being able to see grandparents, teachers or cousins?
Frustrating!
Having to supervise schoolwork all day at home while trying simultaneously to work and/or do all the other things that need to get done?
Also frustrating!
One of the foundational truths about emotion is that it seeks expression. If we understand this truth, we can make the time and space for expression. If we don’t, our emotions will seek expression anyway and will leak (or explode) out of us without our consent. With the emotion of,

NEW COURSE
We now know that there is nothing more stressful than emotional wounding, yet evidence strongly indicates that our children’s world is becoming a more wounding place. We also know that the emotional health and well-being of our children depends upon us being able to keep them safe, yet how are we to do this when our ability to control the situations and circumstances in their lives is waning? Although our educational systems have never tried harder to reduce discrimination and bullying as well as teach empathy, these efforts are proving futile as they do not address the underlying roots of the problems.
Based on new insights in developmental science, Dr. Neufeld will reveal surprising solutions to this distressing problem – answers that every adult who cares for children should know.

Transplanting children - whether the result of remarriage, adoption, parental loss, or change in custody - constitutes the most difficult challenge in raising children. Like plants, it is all about their attachment roots; unlike plants, it is a great deal more complicated. The impact of attachment disruption, even when in the best interest of the child, can be deep and profound, and yet there is a way through.
This course provides effective and encouraging strategies for resolving these challenges and bringing these children to their full potential as human beings. The material is useful for all those who are involved with transplanted children: adoptive parents, adoption agencies, foster parents, step parents, teachers, supporting relatives, social workers, psychologists, pediatricians.

Not everyone grows up as they get older. The construct of psychological immaturity is not new, but only recently has developmental science advanced to the point where the idea of developmental arrest can be spelled out and employed as a powerful explanatory tool for problems in learning and behaving. Once kids are stuck, the usual ways of dealing with behaviour - including sanctions, consequences, and time-outs - actually make things worse.
This flagship course, organized around the constructs of maturation and stuckness, provides a grounding in the conceptual foundations of Dr. Neufeld's formulation of the attachment-based developmental approach.

Most problem behaviour is rooted in instinct and emotion and is therefore unresponsive to conventional forms of discipline or behaviour management. Building on the foundations of the Intensive I, this course sheds light upon the profound impact of separation on a child's personality and behaviour, with special attention given to the problems of aggression, resistance, oppositionality, bullying, distractability, impulsiveness, anxiety, alarm problems, alpha problems, attachment problems, and more.
When the developmental antecedents are understood, the path to effective intervention becomes clear.
The prerequisite for this course is Neufeld Intensive I: Making Sense of Kids
