The Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

This issue of the newsletter is jam packed with information.  As naturopathic doctors, our antennas are always up, tuning into medical studies and natural health offerings and products that can make a difference in our lives and our patients' lives as well.  We are extremely conscious to not buy into the latest health fads and to recommend to our patients health care opportunities that we have tried ourselves or are comfortable with the research.  So as you scroll down in this newsletter you will find a number of products and experiences we have recently tried ourselves and can recommend to our patients as being safe, efficacious and cost effective. Think  Christmas.

Just in time for Christmas: stocking stuffers -- Check out our unique boutique products.  Most of the items we carry are available no where else on the US mainland.  Yes, we have a connection with producers of natural health products in Hawaii.

In between the informational clips below are articles written by ourselves and our associates. Dr. Connie begins by musing on the annual cancer conference we attended earlier this month.  Dr. Marcel follows with an article on alpha lipoid acid (ALA), discussing its therapeutic importance not only in cancer, but in other health challenges.  Acupuncturist Anandini writes about her new offering:  on line consulting in Chinese herbal medicine.  Jane H. offers suggestions on how to manage midlife changes in both inner and outer worlds.  In the Hernandez Center articles at the bottom of this newsletter, Dr. Marcel returns with his takeaways from the cancer conference referred to in Dr. Connie's article.

Finally, it gives Dr. Marcel a great amount of joy to begin publishing excerpts from a talk on natural health that his grandfather gave at the Cuban Naturalist Association in 1926.  Scroll down to see the first quote from the paper.

A couple of other items in this issue of note...

Glutathione  -- the liver just doesn't make enough of it to deal with modern life. This short article will quickly make you yearn for glutathione.  As an aside, more and more people are coming in to our infusion center for glutathione infusions.  The infusions take about five to ten minutes.  They can be done alone or after a Myers Cocktail.

The  Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care  articles include a study on vaping and lung cancer, a discussion on how science is turning to nature for help in addressing cancer and an article on plants used in cancer care.

May all beings be healthy and happy!

Christmas Eve with Dr. Connie, Dr. Marcel
and Friends at Ananda Palo Alto
What most of our readers do not know is that for many years Dr. Marcel has helped coordinate an annual Christmas Eve service and Nativity scene creche at Ananda Palo Alto.

The evening is profoundly uplifting, inspirational and devotional.  So much so that after the 90-minute service ends, many people in the church are reluctant to break the spell by getting up and leaving -- they linger, basking in the pure, radiant energy and hundreds of candles illuminating the church. The effect of the Christmas Eve service is so deep that it has changed the lives of many attendees.

With gorgeous music, storytelling, angels, kings, and shepherds, there is nothing like this offered anywhere in the Bay Area. Drs. Connie and Marcel invite you to join them in celebrating the coming of Christ consciousness in this holy time of year. Everyone is invited to participate at the close of the service in a lovely devotional candlelight ceremony at the feet of the Holy Family and the baby Jesus.

If you are seeking to find meaning, joy and simplicity of message
in the entire holiday experience,  you need to be there.

When: Tuesday, December 24, 7:30 PM.  Free.
Where: Ananda Temple,  2171 El Camino Real,  Palo Alto, CA 94306   (650) 323-3363
Dr. Connie Muses on
Integrative Oncology

by Connie Hernandez, ND
Dr. Marcel and I have just returned from an integrative oncology conference in Seattle. Spending 3 days with some of our most brilliant naturopathic oncologists, we were awed by the depth of the research and clinical experience shared, by the evolution of complementary options, by the commitment of doctors from the U.S. and abroad. Topics ranged from patient and cross professional relations and legalities of treatment to conventional and complementary treatment protocols and pharmaceuticals to lifestyle considerations in cancer. We covered everything from modifications of intravenous therapy formulas for pediatric patients, to statins and anti-parasitics in cancer care to the recipe for Buddha Balls to treat cachexia.

As many of you know, a cancer patient in the United States must be under the care of an oncologist. Other practitioners may offer adjunctive care, but the care that can be provided is limited by standards of conventional care, by FDA restrictions on therapeutics, and even by bans as to what can and cannot legally be said about these therapies. Nonconventional pharmaceuticals and protocols used in Canada, Mexico and European countries may be, in the United States, extravagantly more expensive, unavailable, or out and out illegal. Compounding pharmacies offering formulas not in the conventional pharmacopeia are constantly under attack, resulting in prices for such basic ingredients as intravenous vitamin C and selenium varying exponentially from day to day. All of this is a disconcerting reality and has affected the availability of effective therapies such as I.V. curcumin and mistletoe, photodynamic therapies, and off label uses of existent pharmaceuticals.

The Centurion for Joint Pain Relief
(A "Tesla Recharging Station for Humans")

Jane Hernandez, our resident EFT and hypnotherapy practitioner, got immediate relief from knee pain

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequency) technology was approved by the FDA in 1979 and has been used for the past 50 years to treat various conditions such as non-union bone fractures, rotator cuff tendinitis and peripheral nerve regeneration.

Documented studies indicate that PEMF Devices can be effective for treating osteoarthritis. PEMF treatment can reduce pain and swelling and have overall beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system.

Drs. Marcel and Connie thought to try a PEMF device for these purposes, and came home from last month's conference with the Centurion, a ring shaped PEMF device. Dr. Marcel and Jane (Dr. Marcel's sister and our EFT practitioner) tried it on their knees. Dr. Connie tried it on a threatening frozen shoulder. The research documented efficacy over a month's period of time, but all three of us felt an increase in relaxation and got some immediate relief from joint pain with the first 30 minute treatment. We are all eager to see the effects of the suggested two treatments daily.

Try a treatment in the office yourself. (Contraindicated for those with pacemakers,  electronic stimulators, any magnetic or metal implants, and stents. Inadvisable in the first month of pregnancy.)  $30 for 30 minutes.

To reserve a treatment time please phone 650-961-1660

Our Favorite Toothbrush:  We LOVE it!
Makes Teeth Feel Professionally Cleaned

Do you like the feel of your teeth
after getting them cleaned professionally?

As health professionals, we are well aware of the impact periodontal disease can have on our hearts and other body systems.  One stunning statistic is that 91% of patients with heart disease also have gum disease.  Researchers have implicated gum disease in a number of other conditions, including Alzheimer's, diabetes 2, pancreatic cancer and chronic kidney disease.

Knowing this, over the years we have tried a variety of toothbrushes -- various electric ones included.  No one toothbrush or cleaning system has ever met our expectations -- until now.

At a recent medical conference, one of the booths was demonstrating the cleaning effects of the Kyoui (pronounced kee-wee, like the fruit) Sonic 3000 System.  The presenter must have been a good salesman because he convinced us, and we purchased two of them.

The system comes with three brush heads -- all of them angled to reach the corners and and back of teeth.  One angled head cleans the surface of the teeth. They recommend using this during the day.  Another angled head cleans between the teeth and massages the gums.  They recommend using this at night.  The third head helps remove plaque and tartar off the gum line and hard to reach areas.  They say to use this one once a week.

Here's what we like:  The angled brush heads do reach places that regular toothbrushes do not.  The toothbrush handle is slimmer and lighter than other electric toothbrushes.  One charge last up to 40 days.  It is 100% waterproof.   Most important, our teeth feel really, really, clean after brushing, like we just had a professional cleaning.  No feeling of tartar build up.

Here's what we had to get adjusted to:   It is a whole new way to clean your teeth and we had to become adjusted to the speed at which the toothbrush vibrates.  We also learned that we needed to press the brush very lightly against our teeth, with much less force than a regular toothbrush.  The first few days our thought was, "Wow!  This is intense!" After a week of use, even Dr. Connie, who has very sensitive teeth, looked forward to her daily brushings. We also had to get adjusted to the price -- it wasn't cheap. But after using the Kyoui system, we are grateful that it is available and we are completely on board with it.

Price:  Although the Kyoui Sonic 3000 System retails for $249.99 on-line, when we do a bulk order we get a huge discount and can offer it through our office for $150 plus tax.

How to order:  Phone the front desk (650-961-1660) and tell them you want one.  They will ask for your credit card number.  Your card will not be charged until we place the order. The toothbrushes should arrive within seven to ten business days.

FIT (Food Inflammation Test) TEST:
Kits Now Available From Our office

At a recent medical conference we attended we stopped by one of the booths to discuss advances in allergy testing.  We were so highly impressed with the technology behind this test that Dr. Marcel decided to pay for and do one of the tests on himself.

Food sensitivities affect more than 100 million people worldwide. Food sensitivities cause a range of illness and symptoms, including skin rashes and chronic intestinal diseases.

The FIT Test is a patented, multi-pathway delayed food sensitivity test. The test uses new technology that measures both IgG and Immune Complexes, the most common food-related pathways in the body. The FIT Test measures sensitivities to up to 132 different foods and additives spanning all major food groups. Food elimination based on the FIT Test results reduces symptoms a patient is experiencing.

The FIT Test yields many benefits, including: uncovering which foods are causing inflammation and disease, developing a personalized nutritional guide, and improving a patient's state of health and energy levels. The test is the most sensitive food test available using new patented technology.

A clinical study showed the FIT test helped people with:

* Anxiety and depression
* Bloating and stomach pain
* Inability to lose weight
* Impotence/libido
* Fatigue/insomnia
* Joint pain
* Constipation/diarrhea
* Sugar craving

The FIT test is available from our office for $325.  We only ordered five kits for this initial offering. Reserve yours now by phoning us at 650-961-1660.
Included in the price is a color-coded report showing foods with highest sensitivities, a personalized 7-day rotation diet and an app to help you choose appropriate foods.

Note:  You must be a patient at Pacific Naturopathic to participate in this promotion.

Fast Acting Muscle and Joint Relief Gel
Really Works as Advertised!

Also discovered at a booth at a recent medical conference...

Both Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel have minor musculoskeletal challenges.  In his spiel to us, the company salesman told us a single application would provide immediate pain relief.  We thought, "yeah, sure.  Another snake-oil salesman."  So Connie bared her frozen shoulder, I applied a layer of the gel, and within seconds her pain had lessened noticeably. We were sold.

From the company brochure:  "If you've scoured the shelves at your local store for the ultimate pain relief cream, you know that a lot of them just don't get the job done. You've tried a variety of products for muscle and joint pain relief without success; until now. Relief Rx is a new kind of relief. This proprietary blend of natural herbal ingredients gently absorbs into the skin to provide comfort when and where you need it most. Packaged for your busy lifestyle in a convenient on-the-go tube, just one generous dab of Relief Rx is what your body needs to combat muscle and joint stress."

Ingredients include white willow bark, hemp oil, aloe vera gel, and trace minerals.

Sold for $30 on line plus tax and shipping.   Available in our office for $25 plus tax.

REVISITING:

Ionic Detoxification  Foot Baths in Our Office!

For years we resisted this form of therapy thinking it too woo-woo for our patients.  Then the manufacturer showed us before and after heavy metal testing results performed on foot bath patients.  We were impressed!

Dr. Connie experiences ionic foot bath at a conference

How long are the sessions?

Sessions last 30 minutes. Patients can just sit and relax, read or doze during the session.

What will a person experience?

Nothing except a warm water foot soak during treatment.  Afterward, people may experience a pleasant tingling sensation in the feet. Most people also experience a deep relaxation effect and for some, better sleep.  Often people experience more energy and alertness and a clearing of brain fog.

How often should a person receive treatment?

Any detoxification program has a cumulative effect with repeated treatments.  However, each individual session provides benefits. We offer discount packages for people who desire sustained positive effects. Ideally, people should receive three treatments a week separated by one or two days.

What times are available for treatment?

Any time the office is open.

How much do treatments cost?

Single Session:            $50
6 Session Package:      $255 ($42.50 per treatment, a 15% discount)
12 Session Package:    $480 ($40 per treatment, a 20% discount)
* Package purchases must be paid at the time of scheduling.

Wonderful, Safe, Alpha Lipoic Acid

by Marcel Hernandez, ND

People think because we practice naturopathic medicine we are open to all things natural in helping restore health and balance.  Yes, and no.   We are open-minded, yes, but we depend on our knowledge of biochemistry and study of medical literature for evidence-based therapies to address our patients' needs.  We do not buy into the latest natural health fads until we are certain the product is both safe and efficacious.

We have used alpha lipoic acid (ALA) on occasion for many years as an antioxidant and to address blood sugar abnormalities and diabetic neuropathy.  But an influx of new studies has caused us to expand our usage of ALA in clinical practice.  Here are some facts about ALA:

I know acupuncture isn't something that can be done virtually, but Chinese Herbal Medicine consultations most certainly can be done in the convenience of your own home.

I've noticed a growing demand for virtual consultations in my practice, and since Chinese Herbology is my first love (don't worry, acupuncture is an incredibly close second), I'd like to provide care to those willing to work on their health who can't necessarily make it to my practice for needles.

I'm offering video consultations with the same health intake as I would in my office and customized treatment plans that include personalized Chinese herbal formulas, nutrition from the Chinese Medicine philosophy, Qi Gong/Tai Chi exercises, lifestyle recommendations and whatever else you may need.

I'm an incredibly passionate herbalist, and I'd love to bring my passion to you. If you would like to know more, please contact me!

Glutathione: You've heard of it,
so here are the facts:

(Dr. Connie's comments:)

As n oted in Musings, chemosensitivity, radiofrequency sensitivity, Lyme Disease, and other multisystemic chronic conditions all have in common oxidative stress and the formation of free radicals in the body. Oxidative stress leads to mitochondrial damage, cancer, Alzheimers, Type 2 diabetes, aging and more.

Nutrients such as C, E and alpha lipoic acid are powerful antioxidants, but are destabilized after fulfilling their antioxidant functions. Glutathione restabilizes these nutrients. Glutathione is the body's master antioxidant. It is protective of immune cells, aids detoxification in the liver, slows aging, allows the body to rebuild and repair.

For these and other reasons, we offer Glutathione I.V.s in our office, often after a after Myer's Cocktail but also by itself. Patients report increased sensory awareness and feeling refreshed after a glutathione IV.

Intravenous Glutathione is our most powerful way to introduce glutathione into the body, though we do also use oral liposomal glutathione (available in our office), and oral N Acetyl Cysteine (NAC),  which is a precursor to glutathione.

About food:
Dr. Marcel's Transformational Kabocha (Japanese Pumpkin) Pie Recipe

A little-known bit of information about Dr. Marcel is that he is an excellent ethnic cuisine health food chef whose services are requested at dinner parties and fundraising events.   This is one of Dr. Marcel's most requested recipes.

This is not your traditional American pumpkin pie.  The taste is creamy, not  over-sweet, with a hint of coconut. The subtle flavor of the pumpkin is experienced first, not the sugar.

This recipe is rich in bioflavonoids and makes two pies.  You will need to make your own pie shells or buy them pre-made.

Ingredients:

1 medium-size Japanese pumpkin (kabocha)
2 well-beaten eggs
1 can coconut milk
1/2 cup melted coconut oil
2 tablespoons coconut cream (optional for creamier pies)
4 tablespoons brown sugar or coconut sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup finely grated, unsweetened coconut ( optional for a more pronounced coconut flavor)

Directions:

Cut pumpkin into chunks. Boil until soft so a fork easily penetrates through both orange pumpkin and green skin. Let cool and remove skin.

Combine all ingredients. Mix and mash until creamy smooth and lump-free.
Divide mixture into two pre-baked pie shells.  Bake at 375 degrees for one hour or until golden brown.  We like it either chilled or at room temperature.

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic

- early warning: the advantage of thermography -

thermography
Often, when doctors say they do not believe in breast thermography, they clarify with the comment that breast thermography cannot diagnose breast cancer. As we've often stated, neither breast thermography nor mammograms can diagnose breast cancer. The only diagnostic at this time is a breast biopsy.

Why, then, is breast thermography of interest to us? Breast thermography is based on changes in breast physiology, represented by variations in temperature and vascularization.  These changes reflect increases in metabolism and levels of estrogen exposure. Changes in metabolism may occur as many as 10 years prior to the structural changes seen on mammograms, ultrasounds and MRIs. We can discourage pathologic structural changes by addressing these early indicators.

Breast thermography is offered on most Wednesdays at Pacific Naturopathic.

Can Hypnosis Help You Change at Midlife?  Absolutely.

Jane Hernandez, CCHT

Of course, I'm presuming that you've reached a point in your life where you want and need change.   If you're ready for the next big evolve let's look under the hood for what we can transform.

1. SKILLS AND ASSETS. Right now, you might be contemplating leaving your job for another, going back to school for a new career, or maybe getting back into the workplace because the kids have left. You can do it. Listen, I was in your place and just decided to leave the career I had for many years as a film producer and start school in hypnotherapy. Did I have doubts? Sure, what did film producing have to do with hypnosis? When I considered what I had to offer it was much more than I had anticipated. I knew how to deal with people, start new projects and finish them too, deal with the unknowns of production, and continually learn. It required more study (which still goes on) but I have no regrets and am so grateful that I followed my heart.

My Grandfather's Natural Wisdom

by Marcel Hernandez, ND
Dr. Antonio Hernández de Leon
There must be a genetic component in my choosing to be a naturopathic doctor.  My grandfather was a pharmacist in Cuba in the mid-1900s who showed major disdain for pharmaceutical medicine.

He was a member of the Cuban Naturalist Association and on May 28, 1926, he gave a keynote speech at the Association's annual meeting where he espoused the benefits of natural medicine and expressed concern about  chemical approaches to well-being. Fortunately, my father kept the transcript of his address and translated it into English.  In the coming weeks, I will publish quotes from this speech.  Here is the first:

"A doctor is a good man who sits at the bedside of his patient until science kills him or nature saves him."

What We Offer  at the  Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

There is light in the darkness

Our cancer patients often ask us to give them an estimate of the effectiveness of therapy at the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. We respond that  our entire focus is on helping our patients stay healthy, upbeat and positive.

The truth is that the botanical and nutritional therapies we offer (including  intravenous vitamin C), although 'adjunctive' in nature, have powerful documented actions in decreasing inflammation, reducing tumor load and attacking cancer stem cells.

Our mind/body approaches are focused on transformation of experience.  And our bodywork approaches help reduce muscular pain, resolve lymph drainage problems and relieve stress.

The hope we offer is not that of a miraculous cure,
although we are definitely open to miracles,
but the hope of a life lived to the fullest in dignity
and understanding, for however long that may be.

A Few Takeaways from a
Recent Cancer Conference We Attended

By Marcel Hernandez, ND
High sugar and carbohydrate intake ramps up insulin, a nutrition pump that some cancers use to drive rapid growth.

*   Acid forming foods: salt, sugar, sodas, and meat. Alkaline foods: plants. Acid reduces oxygen saturation, inducing hypoxia. Cancers are acidic and hypoxic.

Metformin Inhibits ovarian cancer cell growth, proliferation, metastasis and increases survival time; turns off cancer stem cells in breast, ovarian and endometrial cancers. So does berberine, curcumin, quercetin, EGCG in green tea extract, and resveratrol.

Alpha lipoic acid (see article in this newsletter) and cancer: antioxidant, hypoglycemic, has mitochondrial and epigenetic effects.  Modulates cancer stem cells, chelates heavy metals, increases glutathione & immunoglobulins, prevents and treats chemotherapy neuropathy.

Lung Cancer:  Even short-term 'vaping' causes inflammation in non-smokers

by Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

E-cigarette use is rising at concerning levels among both smokers and non-smokers, andnew research data suggests that even short-term e-cig use can cause cellular inflammation in never-smoker adults. Inflammation from smoking is an important driver of lung cancer and other respiratory disease development.

Researchers look toward nature to beat cancer

by Lindsay Brownell,  Harvard University
Every year, more than 18 million people around the world are told, "You have cancer." In the U.S., nearly half of all men and more than one-third of women will develop some kind of cancer during their lifetimes, and 600,000-plus die from it annually. Despite the billions of dollars and countless new treatments that have been thrown at it since President Richard M. Nixon declared "war" on the disease in 1971, cancer refuses to be beaten.

Why does it remain such a formidable foe? After all, it's been known since Nixon's day that unrepaired genetic damage can cause  cells to grow uncontrollably, which is viewed as  cancer's root cause. But this understanding has not pointed the way to an obvious treatment. Research into cancer biology has revealed it to be one of the most complex and insidious human diseases for a variety of reasons.

Journal Name: Anti-Cancer Agents in Medicinal Chemistry
Volume 12 , Issue 10 , 2012

Cancer remains to be one of the leading causes of death in the United States and around the world. The advent of modern drug-targeted therapies has undeniably improved cancer patients' cares. However, advanced metastasized cancer remains untreatable. Hence, continued searching for a safer and more effective chemoprevention  and treatment is clearly needed for the improvement of the efficiency and to lower the treatment cost for cancer care. Cancer chemoprevention with natural phytochemical compounds is an emerging strategy to prevent, impede , delay, or cure cancer. This review summarizes the latest research in cancer chemoprevention and treatment using the bioactive components from natural plants. Relevant molecular mechanisms involved in the pharmacological effects of these phytochemicals are discussed. Pharmaceutical developmental challenges and opportunities in bringing the phytochemicals into the market are also explored. The authors wish to expand this research area not only for their scientific soundness, but also for their potential druggability.
