The ALCO RS-3
Featuring TCS Sound Value DCC
Introduced by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in 1950, the all-purpose 1600 horsepower RS-3 was the pinnacle of the company's first-generation diesel locomotives. While successful in the steam era, entry into the diesel market had initially proved challenging for ALCO, with manufacturers such as EMD gaining a stronger foothold in the developing market. Demonstrating the stamina, strength, and dependability to handle road trains, while remaining agile enough to perform yard duties, the RS-3 would change ALCO's fortunes. More than 1400 RS-3s would be delivered both domestically and internationally over the next 6 years, helping to restore confidence in the once-dominant company. Capable of both freight and light passenger duties, a number of these versatile locomotives survived well beyond many of their contemporaries, and examples can still be found operating on short lines and tourist railroads to this day.
Now available as part of our DCC Sound Value range, the Bachmann HO scale RS-3 displays several new paint schemes based on authentic liveries found across the United States during the latter half of the 20th Century. Details on all models include sturdy, scale railings, separately applied coupler cut levers, and authentic underframe components. Each locomotive has also received a road-specific headlight configuration to house the DCC-controllable directional LED lights. Equipped with the TCS Sound Value Diesel Locomotive Package, each model features user-controllable horn options, bell, and prime mover effects, enhancing operation. For added performance, a Keep Alive® device is included to ensure smooth running across dirty tracks and during power interruptions.
