STEM learning can happen anywhere.
Hey families! We hope you have been enjoying our STEM2home activities. This week and next we challenge your student to think like an engineer! Engineers solve problems and create things. Our STEM2home activity this week is to create a Marble Run !

We want to see what you did! Share a picture or video of the activity with us to be entered into a giveaway for a family friendly STEM game (contact-less delivery, of course)!
See Instructions below.

Also, we are pleased to be unveiling our new logo, courtesy of the awesome student interns at Wide Angle Youth Media ! Check them out!

STEM2home Activity
Marble Run
Time: 30 minutes - 1 hour
What you'll need:
  • Cardboard tubes (from a roll of paper towels, wrapping paper, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Shoebox
  • Cardboard packing box (or large pieces of cardboard)
  • Scissors and tape
  • Marble, ball or bottle cap (something that rolls!)
  • Markers or crayons to decorate
Instructions:
  1. Explore your materials: How many cardboard tubes do you have? How big a marble run do you think you can build? What will catch your marble at the end?
  2. Think about a design for your marble run before you start building. Will it zig-zag back and forth? Do you want to include any flat or even uphill sections? Think about whether you want to use the whole tubes or cut them in half.
  3. Place the tubes inside the box so that they form a path. Trim as needed. Use the sides and the back of the box. Secure with tape.
  4. Cut a hole in the top for the marble or ball.
  5. Test the marble run, adjust, and repeat.
  6. Now set some challenges for yourself: Can you make the marble run last for 60 seconds? How would you slow down the marble or make it roll faster? Can you add more ‘jumps’?
  7. You can make a larger marble run by using a big piece of cardboard as your background!

" Even though I know what’s going on, I’d say that the only things that’s changed a bit is that I no longer feel like there’s a possibility of being hurt … Now I just know that it’s safe, so it’s just excitement. "
