Are Leaky Pipes Costing You? The Clinical and Financial Impact of Incontinence

It's estimated 65-70% of residents living in long-term care facilities are affected by incontinence. In addition to the impact on residents’ quality of life measures, this issue adds significant costs associated with continence products, staff turnover, and higher financial burdens. Incontinence impacts quality ratings and re-hospitalization rates. Statistics show there is an elevated fall risk with over 36% of residents sustaining a fall while accessing their bathroom, and 47% of those falls resulting in a substantial injury. In addition, there is a higher prevalence of secondary clinical implications and increased rates of urinary tract infections (47%) and pressure ulcers (41%). Along with the adverse impact on the individual, there are negative consequences to operations and quality outcomes in SNFs, CCRCs, and senior living communities. Viewers will gain an understanding of the mechanisms contributing to Incontinence, the types of treatments available, and solutions associated with the negative consequences of this diagnosis. This session will cover how the Preferred Therapy Solutions model can improve the quality of life for residents and promote aging in place with a positive contribution to census development. In addition, we will explore the operational benefits to your facility by understanding the expenses related to staffing demands, the cost of continence supplies, and PDPM-based reimbursement. By the end of this presentation viewers will have an understanding on the clinical and quality impact of incontinence and learn how this diagnosis affects QRP, 5-Star, and state surveys.

Minimum Staffing Requirements for Nursing Homes Take Effect

In response to concerns that surfaced during the pandemic, New York enacted a new law in 2021 which, among other things, set strict minimum staffing standards for nursing homes. While the law was originally set to take effect in April 2022, a series of executive orders signed by Governor Hochul repeatedly delayed its implementation through June 2023, citing staffing shortages created by the pandemic that made enforcement unfeasible. However, that delayed implementation has now come to an end. On June 30, 2023, New York State’s Department of Health (DOH) issued a notice to nursing home operators and administrators advising that it would begin conducting assessments of nursing home compliance with the state’s minimum staffing requirements on July 10, 2023.
