THIS WEEK
Atlantic Classical Orchestra - Art Walk & Highwaymen Trail Festival - Art in the Park - Musical Martin County
Atlantic Classical Orchestra
The Atlantic Classical Orchestra is in town for another Masterworks Series concert. Which town? Well, as usual, they'll play in Vero Beach at Community Church, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m.; in Palm Beach Gardens at the Eissey Campus Theatre at Palm Beach State College Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m.; and in Stuart at the Lyric Theatre Feb. 15 at 4 and 8 p.m.

The program includes favorites by Copland (Appalachian Spring: Suite), Mendelssohn (Concerto for Violin in E Minor, op. 64) , and Schumann (Symphony No. 1 in B-flat major, op. 38, [Spring]).

If you think you remember that Sibelius was on this program, you remember correctly. An unfortunate performance injury has sidelined Tess Lark, the scheduled soloist, but award-winning violinist Sirena Huang has stepped in to play the Mendelssohn. You might remember her from the brilliant performance of Barber's Violin Concerto last year.

David Amado, music director and conductor of the ACO, sends a very informative and often fun newsletter. Go to the website to subscribe.
Art in the Park
The Vero Beach Art Club has scheduled two Sundays in February for Art in the Park, Feb. 17 and 24. The shows are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on select Sundays from November through April every year.

Art in the Park is a fine arts and crafts show where Vero Beach Art Club members gather, sometimes under trying winter conditions, to show and sell their work. They're there to meet residents and visitors who look for the white canopies that indicate good things are happening in Humiston Park on Ocean Drive on a Sunday.

Each show offers a variety of 2-D and 3-D art: paintings, collage, photography and digital art, sculpture, glass, wood, clay and jewelry. More than 30 Vero Beach Art Club members are on the list of exhibitors, many of them seen at Under the Oaks and Art by the Sea.

The show is coming up on a 40th anniversary. The first Art in the Park was held in 1980 in the Humiston Park location.

Thank you, Friends and Supporters of Arts Blast!
Beginning with this issue, your ARTS BLAST! will arrive earlier in the week so you have time to plan your weekend and can make reservations or get tickets before they're sold out. Note some changes and additions in this issue along with some holdovers from last week.

I'm having a grand time researching the Road Trip! segment and would love to hear about great arts-related road trips you've taken, even if they've been as an armchair traveler. Tell me about memorable visits to museums, galleries, music venues and natural and historic sites that made memories. Nature as art? You bet! Ask any artist, nature photographer or birdwatcher.

Limited advertising will become available in Arts Blast! within the next week or two. Email for information.

ArtWalk Fort Pierce
In case you haven't noticed, Historic Downtown Fort Pierce has exploded with great art and artists in recent years. It started as a trickle a few years ago when an old bank building was transformed into a hub of studios on several floors. There are still many artists working, displaying and selling there but the arts community has become a wide river of talent that flows through the streets of town.

Allie Comer, one of the Seriously Mixed Media artists, filled me in on the inside scoop for Art Walk. I had sent out a general email asking who was in charge. She replied, "The answer is no one- that’s the beauty of it :)" Quite a few of the artists in the bank building, known as ArtMundo, where Art Walk originated, were moving into downtown gallery spaces and wanted to see the monthly event continue, she said. Artist Ginny Piech Street designed the original logo and the current Art Walk map. Allie gathers information on any changes that need to be made, sends them to Ginny to update the map, and then sends the update to Art Walk participants. "That's it. No by-laws. No rules and regs - just be open on Art Walk evening 5-8."

And so, every month, on the third Friday, studios and shops open their doors for the Art Walk on 2nd Street. It's become such a popular event that the street will be closed between Avenue A and Orange Avenue Feb. 15 from 6 to 10 p.m. for a street party. Musicians, artists and vendors will line the streets but don't forget to visit the galleries! A few of them: The Galleria of Pierce Harbor; Underground Art Market; Seriously Mixed Media; Woodcarver's Den; Colleen Nash Becht gallery; The Cake Lady; and there are more.

If you're driving to Art Walk, consider adding a little time to the official hours of the street closing, 6-10 p.m.
The Galleries at First Pres are open to the public Monday through Thursday from 12-3 pm and for guided tours Wednesdays 3 - 5 pm. Artists interested in showing their work may contact Peter and Carole Coe at 772-464-6712. The Silver Tones are in concert at 7 p.m. Valentine's Day.
MUSICAL MARTIN COUNTY
The Treasure Coast Flute Choir delivers its Valentine a little early with a concert Feb. 12 at the Court House Cultural Cente r, 80 E. Ocean Dr. in Stuart. “Special Valentines Concert: The Treasure Coast Flute Choir” is part of the Sunset Concerts at the Gallery series. Lindsay and Al Hager are the directors, leading a collection of musicians playing more varieties of flute than I knew existed: piccolo, C flute, alto flute, bass flute in F, bass flute in C and contra bass flute. The musicians will demonstrate them before the concert, which includes classical, contemporary and jazz selections, Al Hager said. The Hagers founded the group in 1984.

Sunset Concerts at the Gallery is in its fourth year of showcasing the talent of Martin County's musicians October through June. The concerts are free and open to all.

Jim van Voorheis' Jazz in the Sanctuary series has been bringing great performances to jazz lovers for more than 15 years. His Valentine is tenor saxophonist Jeff Rupert, director of jazz studies at the University of Central Florida. Rupert will be joined by Jim on piano, David Einhorn playing bass, and Claudio Berardi drums.

Rupert has recorded with jazz greats Benny Carter and Mel Tormé and more, and performed in top jazz clubs around the world.

Cindy Kessler , president of the Treasure Coast Music Teachers Association and owner of Stuart School of Music , sends word of a piano master class: " On March 3rd, critically acclaimed concert pianist  Vyacheslav Gryaznov  will present a Piano Master Class followed by a Classical Concert in the John F. and Rita M. Armstrong Wing at the Blake Library, 2351 SE Monterey Road in Stuart. The master class and concert are free of charge and open to the public. The event is made possible by a generous grant from Women Supporting the Arts, a program of the Arts Foundation of Martin County."
A Highwaymen Weekend
This is a huge arts weekend in Fort Pierce as the 4th annual Highwaymen Heritage Trail Art Show/Sale and Festival takes over from Friday through Sunday.

It begins Friday with a sale of vintage Highwaymen paintings at the A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery's outdoor mural plaza, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Inside, the Artists of Color exhibition opens with a lecture by Highwaymen collector and the show's guest curator, Roger Lightle. The reception is free for museum members and tickets are available at the door for others. The artists will be at a reception to meet guests there at 7 p.m.

Marshall Adams, executive director of the museum, considers this a very special event. He said people learn the history of the Highwaymen through everything that's going on. "It's a great weekend celebration." On Saturday, free trolley shuttles take people out to the show and festival along Moore's Creek Linear Park, where some of the Highwaymen and other artists will gather. Music and other family activities are part of the weekend and everything but the Friday evening reception is free. The festivities at the park, at 8th Street and Avenue D, go on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale of paintings at the Backus Museum continues through the weekend.
ROAD TRIP!

Road trips on the Treasure Coast for the next two months might include a visit to the Elliott Museum. The Museum is always a magnet for car lovers because of the extensive collection of vehicles of all sorts and the state of the art display system, but coming up is an extended celebration of the car.

Octane & Opulence II: Gentlemen Prefer Race Cars will be available for viewing through March 31.

Consider yourself a true aficionado if you recognized the car in the poster pictured here as a 1958 Tojeiro-Jaguar. According to Robin Makowski, a rt studio & exhibitions coordinator, this is the only one in the United States and one of only four in existence. The other three are in Europe. The owner, Rocky Grady, is guest exhibition curator. Makowski said, “She and her husband, Henry, have several cars in the show including one Henry built and raced in the ‘60s.”

This exhibition will include paintings by John E. Schaeffer, “who specializes in auto and chrome acrylic paintings that roll off the canvas,” Makowski said. The Art Down the Hall space will have race car photos by Bob Bennett, a local photographer.

On Valentine’s Day, the Curators & Cocktails event celebrates Gentlemen Prefer Race Cars with Associate Car Curator John Giltinan. This one requires a reservation in advance.

If You Go:

The Elliott Museum is located on Hutchinson Island at 825 NE Ocean Blvd. in Stuart. Open daily from 10 am – 5 pm. Admission: Adults - $14; Seniors - $6 for kids from 6-12; Under 6 free. Call 772-225-1961 for more information or visit the website: www.elliottmuseum.org .
