“Leftovers” is a series of small abstract paintings. Each painting in the series is created using only “leftover” paint from a larger painting. The creation of the paintings is completely spontaneous and the buildup of texture from dried paint helps determine the final image.

I absolutely love both the texture and the colors of this small painting. As the texture built up it immediately reminded me of land. Since I am using only leftover paint, the texture of the dried paint created mountains and valleys that changed as I layered the paint onto the wood. Then I started thinking about how earthquakes can alter the landscape, which is where the title Quake came from.

Joanne Stowell - The Bright Side

About The Bright Side:

My otherwise-healthy daughter has a stomach condition that has resulted in several hospital stays over the past few years. We have all learned to be flexible and adapt as needed. School and work can be made up later, her health comes first. My husband and I take turns staying with her and sometimes we are there for days at a time with nothing much to do but read, watch TV, or stare out the window. It is amazing just how exhausting it can be doing nothing. During this particular episode she was in the hospital for four nights, sent home for one, and then admitted again for two more. We were worn out. It was very difficult to see the bright side. That is, until the morning of the final day of her stay when we were woken up early by the most incredible sunrise. It was a sunrise that we would have missed had we been at home and busy going about our lives. It was literally the bright side of a very difficult week.
