“Leftovers” is a series of small abstract paintings. Each painting in the series is created using only “leftover” paint from a larger painting. The creation of the paintings is completely spontaneous and the buildup of texture from dried paint helps determine the final image.
This specific piece earned the name Confusion based on how many times the painting changed before it was finally finished. There are two "finished" paintings under this painting, both with signatures in other colors. The first painting contained many bright colors including purple, orange, and blue. It reminded me of Van Gogh's Irises. I enjoyed this painting, but just didn't feel complete even once it was signed. Then the second painting became much darker and had dark blue textured drips coming from the top. I really liked this second painting too, but it still told me it wasn't finished yet. Finally I arrived at this third painting. The texture is still visible from the two paintings underneath and some of the original colors can be seen through the scratch marks. This painting finally told me it was complete.
These little paintings have been such a journey. Since they are all completely spontaneous I never know once I start where they will end up. Many times the initial layer of paint is deceiving. I start to think the painting will go in one direction but then it becomes something totally different. I have learned that I need to just listen to the paint.
