Register for a Joint NEWEA/EPA Workshop
Join NEWEA in partnership with EPA on June 9 in Framingham, MA to take a 360-degree look at your utility and set priorities that work for your utility and community. This workshop will help utilities address a full range of challenges and move toward sustainable management of their operations and infrastructure.

Submit an Abstract to the 2023 Annual Conference
This Friday is the deadline to submit an abstract for NEWEA's 2023 Annual Conference. This prestigious conference, which will take place January 22-25, 2023, annually attracts over 2,200 water professionals for several days of technical sessions, exhibits, student poster displays, and more.

Submit an Abstract to the 2022 Residuals and Biosolids Conference
NEWEA and NEBRA are now accepting abstracts for the Northeast Residuals and Biosolids Conference. The joint NEWEA/NEBRA conference and exhibit is a great forum to learn the latest trends in the management of biosolids and residuals, and it is a must for all those involved in the challenge of managing these materials in the Northeast.

2022 Gap III Energy Grant Program
The 2022 MassDEP Gap III Energy Grant Program will provide $7.5 Million and offer up to $200,000 of grant assistance for eligible entities. The grant program has been expanded to serve new sectors.

Under the leadership of MassDEP, the Clean Energy Results Program (CERP) is an integrated energy and environmental partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) that reduces regulatory or other barriers to clean and energy efficient development across the state. The Gap Grant is a cornerstone of this partnership and is a streamlined energy grant funding model that has helped municipal water utilities reduce their energy usage, operating costs, and improve the environment. The grant is designed to fill the last “gap” in project financing, enabling and encouraging facilities to use energy utility incentives as well as funding from other sources to install selected energy efficiency and clean energy generation projects.

Two information sessions via Zoom are planned to help applicants apply for the 2022 Gap III Energy Grant. To sign up, please provide your email and date preference. You will receive an email with the Zoom meeting details. If you don't receive an email with call details within a few minutes after you submit this form, check your spam or junk folder.

The Growing Problem of Managing Biosolids
Wastewater treatment facilities have been a great public health and environmental success story. This is especially true since the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, which brought all facilities up to the secondary treatment standard that has produced some amazing environmental results. The largest river in New England, the Connecticut, once described by Jo Beth Mullens and Robert S. Bristow in a 2003 research study as “The Nation’s Best Landscaped Sewer” is now enjoyed by boaters, fishers, swimmers, and other water enthusiasts. Many locations along the river are now homes to families of eagles and other wildlife. Rivers across Massachusetts have likewise benefitted and been remarkably improved thanks to modern wastewater treatment.

In order for wastewater facilities to do their job they must be able to manage the biosolids they produce. There are two major wastewater processes, primary treatment and secondary treatment that produce these biosolids. Larger facilities dispose of their biosolids daily while smaller facilities may dispose of theirs once or twice a week. Regardless of size, no facility can hold their biosolids for long periods of time. To do so would result in poor process performance and regulatory violations.
