NEWPORT NEWS –
Starting the week of Aug. 5, a long-term closure will be in place on Richneck Road at Denbigh Boulevard, as part of a project to replace the bridge carrying Denbigh Boulevard over I-64 in Newport News. In order to safely accommodate the lane reductions and reconstruction of the intersection at Richneck Road, Denbigh Boulevard traffic will be prohibited from entering and exiting Richneck Road for the remainder of construction, which is estimated to be complete summer 2021.
Motorists should follow the signed detours directing traffic to use Jefferson Avenue to access Richneck Road and Denbigh Boulevard.
The demolition and construction of the bridge will be done in two stages to allow the bridge to remain open to traffic throughout the project. In the current stage, the bridge has been reduced from four to two lanes of traffic, and bridge traffic was shifted to the two open lanes on Denbigh Boulevard, between Pocahontas Drive and Millwood Drive. During the second stage of construction, anticipated to begin summer 2020, traffic will shift to the two lanes of the newly constructed portion of the bridge, and the full closure on Richneck Road will remain in place during this stage of construction.
