Neil Simon's The Goodbye Girl

TheatreZone continues to explore romance with the award-winning Neil Simon musical comedy The Goodbye Girl. The musical is Simon’s 1993 adaptation of his Academy Award-nominated 1977 film starring Marsha Mason and Richard Dreyfus, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the film. The music was composed by the legendary Marvin Hamlisch with lyrics by David Zippel. The plot centers on a struggling actor who sublets a small Manhattan apartment. The twist? The apartment is already occupied by a recently jilted and unemployed dancer and her precocious young daughter. The musical explores the progression of the relationships between the characters as they strive for successful show business careers. Romance develops in the wings … for better or for worse!

The final show of our 18th season is Rock of Ages, April 27-May 7. While The Goodbye Girl celebrates romance, Rock of Ages is an homage to 1980s jukebox hits from famous glam bands. The two shows perfectly express our "Romantics & Rockers" season theme.

Rock of Ages: April 27-May 7

Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages features the drama and comedy of tumultuous romances and classic 80s rock anthems from the famous glam metal bands of that decade including Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, and Poison.

Rock of Ages is a jukebox musical that will take audiences back to the 80s with well-known rock tunes like “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Here I Go Again,” and “I Wanna Know What Love Is,” says Danni. “The story is a rock ‘n roll romance about a small-town wannabe actress from Kansas and a city boy who wants to be a rock star, and their yearnings for stardom in the City of Angels.”

The musical is set in The Bourbon Room, a nightclub on Los Angeles’s Sunset Strip under threat of demolition by a pair of real estate developers who want to reform the Strip’s “sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll” lifestyle. Amid the campaign to save the nightclub, the characters couple and uncouple before finding their surprising destinies, all while TheatreZone’s five-piece band performs the biggest hits of the era.
