Opinion Writing ... to a Rock Star

Opinion writing to a rock star

It was over the top exciting in Amy Hoaglund’s second grade class when Rick Mitarotonda, the lead guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for the band Goose (and Hoaglund’s brother) came to visit!

His visit to Meadow Pond Elementary was the culmination of the class’s opinion writing unit. Students wrote letters to Rick expressing which of the band's songs was their favorite and why. Each letter had an opening sentence, multiple reasons to support their opinions and a closing sentence.  MORE

Using Proportional Relationships to Share Discoveries

new math project at JJMS

Sixth graders are creating surveys to learn how their classmates consume water, energy and food. When it comes time to compare their grade's usage to that of people in New York City, new skills with rates and ratios will help them to understand proportional relationships and to share the information with others.

The compelling cross-curricular project was designed by teacher Jesse Weiss through New York State’s Learning Technology Grant. It’s one of four new authentic learning opportunities being implemented at John Jay Middle School. Each engages students to be problem solvers and use technology in ways that makes sense. MORE

Unified Basketball Creates Friendships and Confidence

“Look around,” said Kim Piccolino, John Jay’s assistant principal and Unified Basketball coach for the last five years. She was standing courtside with Assistant Coach/Assistant Principal Mallory McDonald as the players warmed up. Students were lightly tossing the ball to each other, giving their teammates as many times as it took for them to sink a shot, and celebrating each success with high fives and big smiles. “This is inclusion. There’s nothing better than this.”

John Jay's much-loved sports team combines general education and special education students in a game that’s all about empowerment and friendship. MORE

Collaborative Art Project Celebrates Trailblazers

Trailblazers painting

The proud smiles said it all. The students who created the new painting entitled “Trailblazers,” installed in John Jay High School’s cafeteria last week, beamed as they stood beneath it for photos.

The painting was created by John Jay’s Iconography Club, an initiative led by English as a New Language (ENL) teacher Davis Santiago to bring students in the school’s ENL program together with those in John Jay’s Equity and Racial Justice Club. MORE
