NEWS: We are changing our name to broaden our reach and refine our focus.

We are now DENVER CENTER for INTERCULTURAL SCHOLARS.

(We'll still be known by our acronym DCIS Foundation and

can still be found at dcisfoundation.org)

What has changed? Dr. Dan Lutz’s visionary goal of incorporating an international curriculum into public education has inspired many DPS schools to embrace multilingual and intercultural education. The DCIS Foundation celebrates this progress and is excited to gradually expand our reach, impacting more students and encouraging more immersive travel experiences. Bottom line: We're growing.

What do we mean by “immersive”?

What about DCIS schools? We will always support DCIS schools. As a part of this, we will continue to advocate for more immersive and intentional programs to augment their special curriculum.

EXAMPLE: DCIS Baker's first Immersive Japanese Travel Trip using our refined criteria, is scheduled for Japan at the end of 2024. This trip, led by Japanese educator Ms. Erina Sudo, will include a school visit, homestays, peer-to-peer Japanese language practice, and cultural engagement activities. Additionally, Ms. Sudo developed this trip without a vendor (DIY), so more students can participate for a lower cost.

Pictured above are DCIS Baker Japanese language students who will attend the 2-week Immersive Japanese Travel Trip in late 2024. Also pictured are board members Dave Smith (President), Brady Efting, and Matt Weimer who conducted the interviews, along with educator Ms. Erina Sudo. (Note: We no longer share student names on social media sites.)

What don’t we fund? We believe that educational travel must be immersive for the greatest impact. Therefore, we will no longer fund trips without evidence of multiple immersive activities and cost-effective travel approaches. This refined focus enriches the travel experience while promoting greater equity, allowing more students to benefit.

What other schools do you work with? In mid-2024, we started discussions with other DPS schools. Our initial focus is middle schools that teach Spanish and other languages and share a goal of immersive intercultural student development. Partnering with other DPS schools will be a slow and thoughtful process. Our first official school partner is Morey Middle School.

Why do we use "intercultural" instead of "international" in our new name? We use "intercultural" to cover both international and local/national travel opportunities. For example, if a school teaches Lakota, an immersive trip for them might be in the United States. For our younger students, local field trips are needed.

Why do we use “scholars” in the name? We call students who travel with the help of our funding “scholars” to honor their efforts and respect their future contributions to our world.

What is the role of the school? The school is responsible for developing the trips and submitting applications with their students during the two-week application window, held twice a year. The DCIS Foundation focuses solely on fundraising and advocating for immersive activities.

How do we distribute funds? The board of directors decides on awards based on an application and interview. Our funding budget is solely based on how much we raise. We can never donate enough to cover all expenses, but typically our donation helps a lot. An awards ceremony is held to celebrate. Each student gets a global scholar pin/certificate and the school receives a check.

How much have we donated? What is our impact? Since 1997, we have:

  • Donated over $670,000 for educational travel
  • Impacted 5600+ students in four schools
  • Visited 45 countries and practiced seven different languages
  • Volunteered over 83,000 hours

Who runs the DCIS Foundation? Our team may be small, but it's mighty. We are supported by an all-volunteer board of directors, an advisory board, and an alumni leadership council. Board members serve three-year terms, with new members added each year. They are insightful, deeply engaged, and bring a broad range of perspectives from across the Denver community. A part-time executive director oversees the nonprofit's operations, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Where do the donations come from? 98% of our donations are from individuals who love our mission, and 2% are from grants. Our annual GALA is our largest fundraising event, followed by a fall/winter fundraising campaign that is completed online. Please consider a donation today to help us grow and support our goals. Save the date for our Gala: Saturday, April 26, 2025. 5:30 - 8:30 pm
