Rep. Deon Tedder’s ‘HBCU Day’ Bill to be Signed into Law Tuesday

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA – February 14 – “Historically Black Colleges and Universities Day” will be recognized in South Carolina the third Tuesday in February of each year as a result of a bill by South Carolina Representative Deon Tedder (D-Charleston) that will be signed into law on tomorrow.

“HBCUs are essential to our place in Black History,” Rep. Tedder said. “These colleges and universities educate our best and brightest students and have an overwhelmingly positive impact on our state. While this will be celebrated for years to come as a day in their honor, this is also about equal representation, inclusion and diversity. As a graduate of an HBCU, it is important to me that we give these colleges and universities the recognition they deserve!”

The bill, H.4576, will be signed into law by Gov. McMaster on Tuesday, February 15.

South Carolina is home to eight Historically Black Colleges and Universities that generate $463 million for the state and employ nearly five thousand South Carolinians.
