KIDS FIRST CENTER ANNUAL CONFERENCE:
KEEPING KIDS OUT OF THE MIDDLE:
EVALUATING, INTERVENING & ADJUDICATING THE NEEDS OF CHILDREN CAUGHT IN THEIR PARENTS' CONFLICTS
THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 2016 - 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM
HARRASEEKET INN, FREEPORT, ME
Co-parental conflict can cost children their childhoods. This interactive, full-day presentation will provide child-centered professionals with a broad overview of child development in the context of high conflict family dynamics.
Questions to be addressed include:
- How does the child's identity emerge and how can it be corrupted by family turmoil?
- How can a child's emotional security be reinforced or undermined by caregivers?
- How do children become polarized within the family system, aligned with one parent and rejecting the other?
- How are destructive systemic confounds such as adultification, parentification, infantilization and alienation best understood, assessed and remedied?
- How and why do some children become chameleons, changing their emotional colors in order to win fleeting acceptance and affection?
Child-centered legal and mental health professional participants in this presentation will acquire practical tools with which to more effectively and efficiently assess and intervene so as to help assure that children have the opportunity to enjoy a healthy childhood. A subsequent panel discussion including both attorneys and mental health professionals will cast these dynamics upon the stage set by the 2015 Maine Parentage Act.
