Boise, ID -- 11/07/2024 -- On Monday, November 11, 2024, Shadow Hills Elementary School students will experience an extraordinary Veterans Day celebration as the Idaho National Guard lands a helicopter on the school’s playground. This unique event offers students a close-up view of military technology while honoring the service and dedication of our National Guard members. This special visit is just one of many Veterans Day recognition events across the Boise School District, where schools honor and celebrate our nation’s veterans in diverse and meaningful ways.

The schedule for the event includes:

  • 1:30 PM: Helicopter landing on the intermediate playground
  • 1:45-3:30 PM: Each grade will have a 15-minute session to visit with the National Guard crew and learn about the helicopter and the Guard’s mission
  • 3:30 PM: National Guard prepares for departure
  • 3:40 PM: Helicopter departure from the playground

Local news media are invited to attend and cover this unique Veterans Day event.

Media representatives who plan to attend are asked to contact Dan Hollar, the Boise School District Public Affairs Administrator, at dan.hollar@boiseschools.org by Friday, November 8th. Upon arrival, all media representatives must check in at the school's main office.

Throughout the day, photos will be shared on the school’s Instagram and Facebook pages, allowing the Shadow Hills community and National Guard members to share in the joy and gratitude for this learning opportunity. Principal Amy Pinkerman and Mrs. Gina Spengler, music specialist, Shadow Hills Elementary, worked closely with National Guard representatives to coordinate all safety precautions, including notifying nearby residents and managing access to the playground during the event.

Shadow Hills Elementary is honored to host the National Guard for this memorable Veterans Day celebration, offering students a firsthand appreciation of service, dedication, and learning beyond the classroom. This event reflects Boise School District’s commitment to honoring veterans across our schools, fostering respect and appreciation for those who serve in our armed forces.
