Federal Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illness Released
Indiana sets new record low for workplace injuries, illnesses
INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 8, 2024) -- The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) data today for 2023. At an estimated 2.6 injuries or illnesses per 100 full-time workers, the 2023 nonfatal injury and illness rate for Indiana is the lowest rate in the state’s history.
At the inception of the SOII program in 1992, the overall nonfatal injury and illness rate was 11.0 injuries per 100 full-time workers. The rate reached a high of 11.3 in 1994 and has since decreased by 77%. The 2023 estimated rate marks the ninth consecutive year that the rate has been below 4.0.
“These decreasing rates show how employers across the Hoosier state realize the importance of safety training and its impact in the workplace,” said Indiana Department of Labor Commissioner David Redden. “We encourage all businesses to continue to follow OSHA safety standards and take advantage of continual safety education for all workers.”
