Manitoba Derby winner draws post 2 in Canadian Derby and $5 bet scores over $69,000 in ASD Jackpot Pick 5

Winnipeg, Canada – August 23, 2023 - It is turning out to be an interesting week for Assiniboia Downs with a single winner hitting the ASD Jackpot Pick 5 and the top 4 horses from the Manitoba Derby heading to Edmonton’s Century Mile Racetrack for the second leg of the Western Canada Triple Crown.

The ASD Jackpot Pick 5 was hit by a player from FanDuel (TVG) on Tuesday night’s program for $69,860. The customer played a $0.20 Pick 5 that included 5,6 / 2,9 / 2 / 8,9 / 3,8,10 for a total of only $4.80.

“What a huge win by this player”, exclaimed Darren Dunn, CEO. “It is great to see a customer hit the jackpot with such a small ticket. That is the beauty of this pool that it can build to such high levels and can also payout at any time. Fantastic to see!”

Also happening this week, Mano Dura, winner of the August 7 Manitoba Derby, along with 3 other leading horses from the race are heading to Century Mile for the $200,000 Canadian Derby.

Mano Dura is owned by Henry S. Witt Jr. who is the leading owner at ASD and is trained by Jerry Gourneau who is the leading trainer at the track.

“The horse is doing great. Training really, really good”, said Gourneau. “You try and put your horse in the right spot so that if everything goes right, he’s got a chance. And I think he’s in the right spot. He’s got post two. Now it is all up to him.”

Gourneau has the opportunity for two horses in the race as Discovery Peak drew post 13 as an Also Eligible and will join the race if there is a scratched horse from the initial 12 entrants. The Canadian Derby at Century Mile runs on Saturday August 26 with an estimated post time of 9:15 pm MT.

Racing continues at Assiniboia Downs every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night at 7:30 pm Central / 8:30 pm Eastern.
