EVERYONE is invited to pitch in with some of the cleanup on Sunday, August 28 after the 9 am service.

Would you like to help with Summer Classic table setting or clean up?
Would you like to join in with  Olivia Flisher Lisa Valenzuela and  Cathy Pepe setting tables for the Summer Classic, and then cleaning up after the event?

There are tasks on Friday, August 26, Saturday August 27, and Sunday August 28 (pick the days that will work for you). Most of the work is on Friday starting around 9 am through midday. On Saturday, we will begin around 9 and be done by 11 or 12. On Sunday, we will dismantle the table settings, working in teams to check the linens for stains and organizing them for laundering. We will begin after the 9 am service (10 am or so). Also needed: 5 or more people to take home tablecloths and napkins to launder and fold (no need to iron). If you would like to join on any of this work, please contact one of our table setting chairs: Olivia Flisher at oflisher@comcast.net; Lisa Valenzuela lmallstars@hotmail.com; or Cathy Pepe cathy@clospepe.com).

Supporting our Community service programs
Summer event is Saturday, August 27:
The Summer Classic
St. Mark's is  open to the world around us and serves as a visitor, hospitality, and community center, and an arts and music venue for the whole Santa Ynez Valley region. We also serve many visitors to our area with a warm welcome and needed services. To support this work we have a summer event each year. In 2016 the event is The Summer Classic , a silent and live auction of fine wines and unique lifestyle experiences, magnificent hors d'oeuvres and dinner from  Jeff and Janet Olssen at New West , top-flight local wines to enjoy and entertainment from Grammy winning  Mads Tolling  . The evening event will be  Saturday, August 27 . We hope to host many who have supported our work in the past as well as new guests. As with all our events: many hands will make light work in presenting the event - help of all kinds from members and friends of St. Mark's will make the event a success - and keep St. Mark's in service to those who need this special place in the wider community.
Everyone working together now for our August 27 event

Our Summer Classic auction of fine wines and unique lifestyle experiences on August 27 will help St. Mark's further its mission of community outreach and serving as a visitor, hospitality, and community center, and an arts and music venue for the whole Santa Ynez Valley region. This event is offered by  everyone at St. Mark's working together to welcome the circle of neighbors and friends of the parish (from near and far) who care about our community service work and our professional preschool.

St. Mark's provides a no-cost meeting venue for more than 60 community organizations annually, performance and art exhibit space, a professional pre-school and a daily safe haven with shade, water, restrooms and Wi-Fi for any visitor passing by.

St. Mark's has a generous, hard-working and committed congregation, happily volunteering all year both within the church as well as throughout the Valley.  The Summer Classic chairs are constantly asked  "How can I help?"

Underwriting necessary expenses is another great way for members to help make the Summer Classic successful. While many St. Mark's folks make in-kind gifts and donate items, we can eliminate more expenses through underwriting.

Gifts of any amount will help reduce the percentage of our expenses, with a goal of 0%. Underwriting will make more funds from the event available for community service.

Mainly,  we all work together to create the event and provide the "people power" to staff all the different committees and do the tasks involved. Many hands make light work!

Some, especially those who want to bid on rare and fine wines and very special event experiences (or bring someone who does), donate for a reservation for the event. Many encourage their friends to donate fine wines or special opportunities to be auctioned - and let those same friends know how to reserve to come bid and take home some new treasures.

If you are interested in underwriting, please contact  Carol Anders (688-3445 or cadaanders@hotmail.com) or
Jim Lohnas  Jim Lohnas , (448-5403 or jimlohnas@gmail.com) , Summer Classic Chairs . Also, let them know if you would like to work on the event - there's something for everyone to do, a way for everyone to contribute.

Ministries displays; Sunday School registration
Fall Faire is Sunday, September 11
All ministries, guilds and groups offer displays and information inviting participation in all aspects of our life as a faith community on Sunday, September 11. Displays are ready that day by 8:45 for those who come to the 8 am service and also for the refreshment time after the 10 am service. Leaders of all of all aspects of our parish life can be planning now for an attractive and creative display.

Also, be thinking about friends and acquaintances to invite to St. Mark's for this first day of the new program year. A personal invitation is the most effective way for people to realize that they are truly welcome at St. Mark's.

The 5 pm service continues year-round for those who enjoy either the time of day or a more casual service.
Want to be part of the new handbell choir?
St. Mark's was recently given a full set (about two and a half octaves) of professional handbells by a Long Beach church - watch for more information about this exciting special gift. The gift will make our handbell choir an even more delightful activity. You don't have to be part of our choir or have another music specialty to be part of this group and learn how to make a "joyful noise" with handbells.

Christmas Luncheon planning underway
Yvonne Lowe and Mary Beth Johnson would like to hear from you if you have a knack, skill, talent, flair, aptitude, gift or propensity for creating, baking and crafting. They would love to showcase your creations at this year's Women's Guild Christmas Luncheon.

This delightful annual event is the traditional opening of the holiday season in the Santa Ynez Valley; be sure to circle it on your calendar and start planning on who you will invite!

The Luncheon features a wonderful Holiday Boutique - of handmade jams, jellies, cakes, arts and crafts - all just in time for holiday entertaining and gift-giving.  All of these make wonderful Christmas gifts and help raise money for the Guild and the projects they support year by year.

St. Mark's Women's Guild supports needs of the parish and the greater Episcopal and Santa Ynez communities in a variety of ways including: assisting in acquiring church furnishings and equipment; donations to the Hillside House for children, supporting Friends of the Library, local school libraries and providing scholarships to our excellent professional preschool and our college students.

For more information or to get involved, contact Mary Beth Johnson ( 895-1712, mbj3@mac.com ) or Yvonne Lowe (708-6129 or yvonne@smitv.org ).
In honor of Millie...
St. Mark's Barrett Family Fund is receiving donations
St. Mark's-in-the-Valley has established a fund in honor of  Millie Barrett , receiving donations to assist as the family faces the impact of medical and other end-of-life expenses. To make tax-deductible donations to the Barrett Family Fund you are invited to send checks  payable to St. Mark's with the  note: "Barrett Family." Those who wish to use a credit or debit card are welcome to contact Business Manager  Leslie Zuller at  sm33@verizon.net or  805-688-4454 to pass along details of the donation and card information. Funds will be received in a restricted fund and 100% will be passed along to Chris, Wyatt and Jane. Mailing address:  P.O. Box 39, Los Olivos, CA 93441 .

Would you like to share your brass candlesticks for the Summer Classic?
Plans are underway for decorating the dinner tables for the Summer Classic, benefitting St. Mark's and our community services, August 27, 2016.  The Table Decorating Committee would like to borrow as many as possible brass candlesticks - all sizes.  If you would like to share yours, please put your name on a piece of tape on the bottom of your candlesticks and leave them with Silvia in the church office, or call Lisa Valenzuela (705 1631) or Cathy Pepe (735 7867).
Centering Prayer is Tuesdays at 4 pm, anyone is welcome to participate
Centering Prayer meets Tuesdays at 4 pm in the Chapel for twenty minutes of silent prayer, followed by a meditative walk to the Parlor, for tea and conversation. Centering Prayer is a way of cultivating our relationship with God that is beyond words, thoughts, or emotions. The practice is from the teachings of Fr. Thomas Keating, O.C.S.O. All are welcome. For more information, please contact  Freda Iverson (805-448-6604 or f.iverson@me.com)  and/or Mary Ann Evans (maebe@verizon.net, (689-0849) .

Standing Announcements

See below for weekly and general information...

Greetings (from the Greeters) to all!
You might be interested in donating smiles and a warm hello on Sundays before the 10 am service as people come through the front door. If you are interested in helping as a greeter periodically please contact Elizabeth Quick at elizabeth.quick2@gmail.com or call at 805-705-4621.

Greeters differ from ushers in spending time helping visitors and new members get acquainted with St. Mark's, oriented to our worship and introduced to other members and the clergy. Greeters also offer special attention to members of the parish and those with special needs.
Available each Sunday in the church and in Stacy Hall
The Sunday Paper is a resource for children and families
Each Sunday the Sunday Paper and Sunday Paper, Jr. (two different formats) tell the story of the Scripture readings in cartoons. The Sunday Paper, Jr. also has a note to parents each week. Christian formation and nurture is most effective at home and in conversation with parents and other caregivers. The Sunday Paper gives families and opportunity to tell the stories of scripture and discuss what they mean to you. Copies are in both entrances of the church and on the back table as you arrive at church as well as in Stacy Hall each week.
Revitalizing the Transportation Guild
Seeking drivers and riders
Calling all drivers and all riders! We have cars ready to help our Parishioners and Friends of St. Mark's who may need a ride to church, a medical appointment, the grocery store or any other activity. You ride. We drive. Reach Bill Connell at 917-287-7493 or wconnell@connellandersen.com.
The chapel is a family seating resource
Families are welcome to sit anywhere and those who wish are invited to enjoyed the rug and chairs in the chapel as a place easy for little ones to see - and a space to enjoy soft toys on the rug during the service. Also, the door to the outside offers easy access and egress if a walk outside is part of morning worship. The chapel is at the front and to the right of the altar - the bright space with the large stained-glass window.
Each and every Sunday
Family Coffee at Sunday School dropoff
All Sunday School families are invited to gather for coffee and conversation in Stacy Hall every Sunday at 8:30 am.  Childcare begins at 8:30 am and a special snack for children will be provided while parents have time for connecting with other parents before the 9 am service. Questions? Want to help with snacks? Contact  Emily Harwell  at harwellcrew@gmail.com.
Our Sunday School invites your time and skill
The SMITV Sunday School program invites members of our parish community to teach within our parish family. Come spend an hour with the younger members of the congregation - a wonderful alternative way to hear God's voice. If you would like to help, please contact:  Hayley Firestone Jessup , (805) 698-4540, hayleyjessup@gmail.com.

Recognizing our special days...

Your Birthdate and Anniversary requested
We are recognizing those who are having birthdays and anniversaries each week - by name and in prayer at the altar. Please send your birthdate and anniversary date to Silvia Lucatero who is taking care of the list. Her email is: slucatero@gmail.com. You can also jot down the information on paper - and place it in the alms basin on Sunday at the time of the offering or put it on the Greeter desk in the parish office.

Donations of food and basic personal care items needed each week.
In your weekly donations: basic toiletries such as soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, diapers, and such.  Ongoing needs are jam, spaghetti sauce (they have lots of pasta), juice and cereal. Peanut butter, granola bars, soups and canned chicken from Costco are also always welcome items. Adding one or more non-perishable food items to your cart each week and bringing it to St. Mark's for hungry Santa Ynez Valley neighbors.

Many in our area who live on fixed incomes can pay all their bills but don't have enough left for food and other necessities.

Sharing an announcement with the parish? Easy!

It's easy to share your announcement with the parish through the Weekly Roar!   Write what you want to say; have it ready to "cut and paste." Email it to Paula Hunsicker: pkhunsicker@icloud.com by Wednesday.

Scheduling an event on the calendar? Easy!

Be sure to schedule any event that uses space at St. Mark's to avoid a conflict and inconvenience for you and your group. Go to the Building Use link on our website (hotlink on the Home page or under Welcome). You find a fillable form online to submit with all the needed information. Our buildings and the calendar are cared for by  Silvia Lucatero at silvia@smitv.org.

You are invited to host Sunday refreshments

Hosts for refreshments are welcome each Sunday and help provide a key experience of hospitality and community for St. Mark's and our guests. Anyone is welcome to host and snacks need not be elaborate - absolutely anything you choose to provide - for about 25 people for the 8 am service or 45-50 after the 10 am service.  Hosts will have help from Vestry members to make coffee (and there are also simple directions - like using a "Mr. Coffee" machine). The duties are simple: to bring milk or half and half and set that out to go with coffee, replenishing as needed, and then cleaning up afterwards - also a simple matter. The sign up is in Stacy Hall. Questions? Contact Marilyn Allmon at 688-2729.

In memory or celebration...
Flower dedications any and every Sunday
null

Flowers at the altar are an important part of our Sunday Eucharist and add to the beautiful and devotional setting for our worship.  Altar Guild members arrange these flowers each week. The flowers are paid for by the Altar Guild budget, which is enhanced by donations made by parishioners, usually in celebration or commemoration of a meaningful event. They can be made in celebration of a birthday or an anniversary, in thanksgiving for a new birth or another milestone, or in memory of a loved one who has died.  Most of us have made contributions at Christmas and Easter, which results in the glorious profusion of flowers during those two seasons.  However, throughout the year we as individuals have the opportunity to donate flowers to the Glory of God and to commemorate personal events in our lives.

Even in the seasons of Advent and Lent, when floral arrangements give way to other seasonally appropriate displays, your gift and commemoration can be remembered in the appropriate week. Also, more than one remembrance can be recognized each week - so if your birthday and someone else's wedding anniversary are the same week, both can be remembered.

For your convenience, there is a chart in the back of the church, or you may contact Altar Guild member Jeannie May (689-4050 or jeannie@the100acrewood.com). Jeannie will let you know how to make your donation for flowers, and will get the wording of the dedication you want to make to the Altar Guild and onto the parish's unified schedule for the weekly eRoar and Little Roar.

Clergy Sabbath is Monday

St. Mark's agreement with the Rector specifies two days off each week, one of which is directed to be a full 24-hour period.  Monday is that day. You can help St. Mark's honor its agreement by scheduling meetings, special visits, calls and email on days other than Monday.

Contacting the Rector?  Easy!

Plan to meet in person, share an idea or ask a question: it's easy to contact the Rector any day.  Text or call 245-4921 or email randall@smitv.org or

Did you know?

Gluten-free bread available at the altar

Anyone who would like gluten free bread at the altar is welcome to receive it at any service. Thank you to our Altar Guild for providing this option. Simply let the priest presiding at the Eucharist know your preference.
Would you or someone you know  like to be visited?
Lay Eucharistic Visitors bring communion to members who cannot come to church
LEV

"We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup." It is with these words that the congregation at St. Mark's-in-the-Valley regularly sends forth Lay Eucharistic Visitors from its Sunday services to bring Communion to those who cannot come to church. St. Mark's has twelve visitors serving God and the parish. These volunteers are members of St. Mark's who have been trained to share the pastoral and sacramental ministries of the Church.

These individuals go wherever they are needed - to peLEV 2ople's homes, to hospitals, and to nursing homes to visit people who are temporarily unable to come to church as well as those who are homebound long-term. They perform a simple order of worship and share information about the parish. Lay visitors also offer Communion to any friends and family of the recipient who might be there as well.

These ministers of Christ's love play a crucial role in St. Mark's parish life, and have offered comfort to those who may need it the most.

To learn more about the Lay Eucharistic Visitor program or if your have someone you know that would like to be visited, please contact: Freda Iverson 805-448-6604, f.iverson@me.com.
Who schedules our regular ministries each week?
Each ministry coordinator sends the service schedule to those who are on it. Please be sure to check the schedule and put the dates you are serving on your calendar to avoid confusion on Sunday. If you've lost the schedule, please contact your ministry coordinator; they will be happy to resend it.
Contact information is in your directory.
