Changing the World
Making Peace with the Other in Ourselves
There is a lot of “othering” going on these days. Who is the enemy? Who should we be afraid of? Who is stealing our freedom? Before it became widely connoted as holy war, “jihad,” meaning to struggle, referenced a kind of war within ourselves, an inward struggling between the heart and head. Jesus taught “love your enemy.” Who is this enemy? While there may too be external things we struggle with, is not the toughest enemy the one we battle within us every day? Is it not the part of us that judges and criticizes our self? Do we not steal our own freedom? Is not the “other” something inside as well as out?

I believe deeply in the power of turning toward warring parts and painful unfinished experiences that need our love and compassion. My teacher Ann Weiser Cornell has wonderful articles, an e-course and other materials that are free and informative on her website .

Check out my favorite article about how to deal with your own inner critic and more here or try out her e-course here .
