Digital Pathology Prepares

NYCPM Students for Podiatry's Future

New Book Highlights Dr. Leifer's Approach

Second-year students in the Pathology class taught by Zev Leifer, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Pathology at NYCPM, are being "trained for the digital world that is rapidly approaching" the medical professions, including podiatry, according to Dr.Leifer. The inclusion of his teaching methods in the recent publication of Digital Pathology, by Yves Sucaet and Wim Waelput in the Springer Briefs in Computer Science series, indicates that NYCPM is a model for pathology education, he notes.

Virtual Microscopy (VM), in which a traditional glass microscope slide is digitized so that its image can be seen on all devices at any time, manipulated, shared and studied by a group (e.g., of students, of medical professionals) is the future. Digital images in electronic pathology reports, Dr. Leifer says, will replace photographs; similarly, digital images embedded in journal articles can be manipulated as are the VM images in class. Pathology reports and journal articles will become more relevant when readers can work hands-on with the images.

Common (i.e., shared) images make it easier for a podiatrist to consult with a pathologist, says Dr. Leifer; they can look at the same image at the same time on their own screens. For his class, Dr.Leifer created a wiki, a shared website, to which all of his students can upload the images they have manipulated, annotated and commented upon so that all can see and respond.

Looking farther into the future, says Dr.Leifer, is 3-D printing of pathology slides, his current research interest.
