Join transportation agencies across the country in recognizing Rural Road Safety Awareness Week (RRSAW) on July 13–17, 2026. This year's theme, "The Rural Modes", highlights the importance of making rural roads safer for everyone, regardless of the mode of choice.

Connecticut agencies are encouraged to participate by sharing safety messages and promoting awareness in their communities. The National Center for Rural Road Safety offers free graphics, social media posts, and other outreach materials to support your efforts.

A recent Government Technology article highlights how state DOTs are using artificial intelligence to make better use of transportation data, and the CT Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is among the agencies leading the way.

The article features CTDOT's internal "DOT Bot", an AI-powered chatbot that helps employees quickly search agency documentation and provides findings that include the document source material. As AI continues to evolve, CTDOT is demonstrating how innovative technology and strong data management can support smarter decision-making across the agency.

From downloadable handouts and social media graphics to presentations, walk audits, and safety campaigns, this program provides valuable tools for municipalities, schools, organizations, and community groups.

UConn is essential to processing crash reports (almost 9,000 a month) and making the data available to stakeholders.

UConn College of Engineering faculty and staff will again be a part of Connecticut’s critical transportation safety initiatives, this time through a nearly $12 million grant that will benefit drivers, pedestrians, law enforcement personnel, and others.

The Connecticut Transportation Safety Research Center (CTSRC) has renewed its partnership with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) through a new five-year, $11.95 million agreement. This investment will support cutting-edge crash data systems, advanced safety analytics, law enforcement training, and innovative research to help make Connecticut’s transportation system safer for everyone.  

The CTSRC operates through UConn’s Connecticut Transportation Institute (CTI). CTI serves as a focal point for transportation-related research at the university and training throughout the state, and since 1995, has brought in almost $175M in state grants.

A recent APWA Reporter article highlights how mutual aid agreements help communities respond more effectively to emergencies by allowing agencies to share personnel, equipment, and expertise when local resources are stretched. From severe storms to public health emergencies, collaboration across jurisdictions is essential for protecting communities and accelerating recovery.

Here in Connecticut, municipalities benefit from the Connecticut Intrastate Mutual Aid Compact (IMAC), established under Public Act 07-56. IMAC provides a statewide framework that enables participating municipalities to quickly share resources during declared local civil preparedness emergencies, strengthening emergency response through coordination and preparedness.
