Emotional intelligence is innate to everyone and important for every church. It impacts communication, teamwork and conflict management. And it creates an inclusive, welcoming environment.

Emotional intelligence, like the ancient principle to “know thyself,” is about being fully aware of oneself and fully present in relating to others. That includes recognizing and addressing true emotional needs and motivations for our behaviors. Jesus practiced emotional intelligence in teaching us how to love ourselves and one another. And if we are to follow Jesus in our daily lives—or even to fulfill the Wesleyan goal of creating mutually supportive communities in ministry together—then we need to learn about and use emotional intelligence.
The Rev. David Piltz , Pastor, Conference Young People’s Ministries Coordinator, Campus Minister, and Marriage & Family Therapist

This workshop provides insight into Jesus’ life and approach to managing conflict, creating believers, and teaching others about living life with God at the center. It provides answers to helping those who perceive and experience oppression, inequality and violence.

The trainers—the Revs. David Piltz and Anita Powell of Eastern PA Conference Connectional Ministries—will help lay and clergy participants learn to:

  • Define and benefit from using Emotional Intelligence.
  • Identify effective methods to communicate, collaborate and forge partnerships with others.
  • Enhance one’s leadership style by actively using emotional intelligence.
  • Create leadership teams and congregations that are emotionally intelligent.
  • Identify through scriptures Jesus’ use of emotional intelligence.
  • Create action plans to implement emotional intelligence in churches and ministries.

This highly introspective and interactive program can help anyone gain personal self-awareness. Strengthening one’s emotional intelligence results in:
  • Increasing satisfaction and happiness in life and work.
  • Regulating and managing one’s emotions.
  • Understanding root causes of our behaviors and interactions with others.
  • Helping groups to successfully navigate conflict and disagreement.
  • Enhancing diversity and inclusiveness within congregations.

The training is designed for: clergy and lay servants, ministers and leaders; chairs of conference and local church teams and committees; and anyone else interested in creating an inclusive, nurturing church.

Emotional Intelligence is learning to be more aware of oneself and others, including our cultural similarities and differences. This way of being helps us to understand circumstances and challenges, and to frame our responses in ways that are affirming and life-giving. We learn to relate to ourselves and our neighbors in the ways that Jesus Christ did. I encourage everyone who desires to share and reflect Christ’s gospel of love to join us on this journey by attending this workshop "
