Many ELs in the Palm Springs Unified School District are a part of the District’s Mission Graduate program that helps them earn credentials needed for high school graduation. This program is only a part of the district’s comprehensive effort to help ELs succeed academically. Other initiatives include Zoom sessions for newcomer ELs, bilingual education programs, and recognition ceremonies for ELs who have achieved English language proficiency.

If confirmed, Miguel Cordona will become the new Secretary of Education. Mr. Cordona’s parents immigrated to the United States from Puerto Rico and spoke Spanish at home. At the time Mr. Cordona started school, he was considered an EL. Many hope that the new Secretary will become an advocate for ELs and will push initiatives such as funding for equitable education, bilingual programs, and teacher training.

In this interview, Larry Ferlazzo talks to Valentina Gonzalez and Melinda Miller about their new book. The authors share their motivation for writing the book and their hope that it will help English as a Second Language and general education teachers support ELs in developing reading and writing skills. The authors also discuss some of the instructional strategies and approaches to supporting ELs that are described in their book.

NABE has extended the application for this award that recognizes the efforts that bilingual classroom teachers make on behalf of ELLs. The winner of this annual competition will receive a $500.00 scholarship to further his or her education or to use for the benefit of ELLs.

Registration is now open for CARLA’s wide range of institutes targeted at foreign/world language, English as a Second Language/English as a Foreign Language, heritage language, and immersion educators from a variety of teaching levels and contexts. All of the 2021 CARLA Summer Institutes will be taught online in either an asynchronous or synchronous format.

OELA announces a call for peer reviewers for the 2021 NAM program grant competition. The deadline to submit resumes for consideration is February 26, 2021. The purpose of the NAM program is to award grants to eligible entities to develop and enhance capacity to provide effective instruction and support to Native American students who are identified as ELs. The goal of this program is to support the teaching, learning, and studying of Native American languages, while also increasing the English language proficiency of students served. Questions?
