NFCA at ICC Code Hearings and ASTM Committee Days
October brought NFCA to the International Code Council’s Public Comment Hearings and ASTM’s Committee Days. Both are places that NFCA and NFCA Members work together to bring attention to fireproofing for fire and life safety in buildings. At ASTM, several NFCA Manufacturer Members including John Dalton at GCP, Phil Mancuso of Isolatek, Ed Goldhammer from Hilti, and Bill McHugh worked on the ASTM E605 and ASTM E736 Standards, plus others. The meetings are always productive.
At ICC’s Expo, Kevin LaMalva, Simpson Gumperts and Hager, spoke on ‘Restrained and Unrestrained’ designs providing insight into this topic to the building officials in the audience. The Code Development Hearings finished the 2021 code development cycle, with one more approval still to go. The Online Governmental Consensus Vote takes place until December sometime.
NFCA Update
NFCA & AISC – The American Institute of Steel Construction’s (AISC) CEO Charlie Carter met with NFCA’s Board of Directors to present new programs AISC has developed to make steel construction even more competitive to the building owner client than it is now. NFCA was pleased to participate in AISC’s “Innovation Conference” in 2018 and looks forward to future collaboration with AISC.
Fireproofing Inspection & Accreditation – Fireproofing Special Inspection has been part of the Legacy Codes for decades before the International Building Code (IBC). It has been part of the IBC since its inception. In the IBC’s Chapter 17 are two Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) Approvals for special inspection – the Agency AND Inspector. While it seems focus is on the inspector, the approval of the Agency is just as important. If the agency doesn’t have experience and competence, equipment, how can it hire and supervise inspectors that provide a key life safety service? One way to approve fireproofing inspection agencies is using IAS AC291, a management system based program that assesses competence of the inspection agency AND its inspectors. This is also a way Inspection Agency Firms can separate themselves from others.  Watch for more on this in 2020.
