NFRC’s committees and subcommittees have released four ballots for members to review ahead of the Spring Committee Virtual Meeting. After reviewing, members can comment and vote. The ballots reflect proposed changes to NFRC’s documents and are open for comment until March 4, 2021. Your vote is your voice! Review the ballots here.

Join Scott Hanlon, Director of programs, on Feb. 18 for a webinar that will review everything about the balloting process from who creates a ballot to how to comment on ballots to how they are resolved at a meeting. Click here for more information and to register.

FenStar®  Certification Program 2021 Notifications Being Sent

In January, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the list of manufacturers whose units were selected for verification tests for 2021 as part of the FenStar ® Certification Program. By March 1, FenStar staff will have notified all participants regarding these verification tests for 2021. We will continue to reach out to non-responsive participants in the following ways:

  1. The first follow-up email will be sent one week after the initial attempt.
  2. The second follow-up contact will be via phone and email one week after the first follow-up attempt.
  3. One week after the second follow-up, the participant will be reported to EPA as non-compliant.

We need your cooperation to ensure all units are tested. If the FenStar contact at your company has changed, please email staff at fvt@nfrc.org. Information regarding changes to the FenStar program and status updates on verification tests will be posted on the NFRC FenStar landing page

With the current need to work and socialize remotely, NFRC’s online events and webinars are great ways to stay engaged and connected to the fenestration industry. Many of us want to network at an NFRC event in person, but remote workshops and trainings can still offer the same valuable information to build and grown your professional portfolio.

In 2021, NFRC has more than 15 educational and informational webinars on topics ranging from sustainability to emerging technology to updates on NFRC programs.
Upcoming events:

  • Feb. 18 – Basics behind NFRC Balloting 101  Ballots will open for comment in February before the Spring Committee Virtual Meeting. This webinar will go over how to comment, the different types of comments, and the protocol for voting on ballots during the Spring Committee Virtual Meeting in March. - Click for more information and to register

Building Official Pushes Energy Efficiency Planning in Building Design
Gil Rossmiller, an energy-code champion and former building official in Colorado, shares his experience working with builders early in the planning process to ensure energy-efficient windows, doors, and skylights are part of the initial design. Efficiency isn’t just a best-practice ideal, he said, it’s also good for business. Join the Building Envelope Campaign today to Support Energy Efficiency
The Building Envelope Campaign (BEC) is designed to help building owners and managers create more energy efficient buildings by improving the building envelope performance (BEP) value. Through the BEC’s new building envelope assessment tool, you can determine your building’s BEP value and identify areas for potential envelope improvement. Best of all, joining the campaign is free and obligation-free! Each year the BEC recognizes high-performing building envelopes, and the deadline for submittal for this year is Friday, April 2, 2021. Recognition categories can be either new construction or retrofit, commercial or multifamily residential, and completed since January 2019. Don’t wait! The BEC is a program of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings initiative.

Window and Door Magazine Features NFRC’s LEAFF program
NFRC’s Program Director Scott Hanlon discusses the new Linear Energy Analysis for Fenestration or LEAFF simulation methodology that could help manufacturers get their products to market faster in a blog in Window and Door Magazine. Read the blog here

A voluntary pilot program will be available before full implementation of the LEAFF methodology to ensure the smooth operation of the program. It is anticipated that this pilot program will last for a minimum of six months. At the discretion of NFRC's Board of Directors, the pilot program may be lengthened based on monthly updates provided by staff.

To assist NFRC’s certification participants and inspection agencies, NFRC will work with them to provide a presentation on the LEAFF implementation plan available to their respective members. Staff will host these presentations in advance of implementing the LEAFF pilot program. Please stay tuned for future NFRC bulletins regarding the LEAFF methodology.

If you have any questions, please contact Scott Hanlon. You may also refer to the LEAFF Frequently Asked Questions page HERE.
