Meet the Counselors:

Alexandra Brown, MSW, LSW

When Alexandra Brown was in high school, she began her personal journey with counseling when she saw a therapist for the first time. She never had a safe space to express her feelings or process her emotions until she started counseling.

“In that moment, I was able to release my emotions and get them out of the way,” Alexandra said. “I remember asking my counselor back then about her career path because I wanted to help people the same way she helped me.”

Meet the Counselors:

Andrew Cao, MSW, LSW

As a college student, it didn’t take long for Andrew Cao to figure out a career in the medical field was not in the cards.

“I cannot stand the sight of blood, so medical school was out,” Andrew recalls with a laugh. “I had received therapy and various social services in my life and found them very helpful. Those experiences helped shape me into the person I am today. After reflecting on those experiences, I was excited and grateful when I realized that I could make this a professional career.”

Meet the Counselors:

Chaya Kohn, MSW, LSW

Chaya Kohn has always been the person who people approached to “talk about things.”

“Since I was younger, people just chose me as that comforting person who they could share their feelings with,” Chaya said. “I’ve actually met people who have spoken to me and asked, ‘Are you, like, a therapist or social worker?’ It just seemed like a natural fit for my personality and I’ve always been passionate about helping people.”

Meet the Counselors: Guadalupe Rangel, MA, LAC, NCC

“Mental health chose me,” reflects Guadalupe Rangel, a counselor at Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB). “It took me a long time as a teen and young adult to realize I could attend college and pay my way through school. My first psychology class helped me understand so much about who I am and why I am the way I am.”

When a professor who Guadalupe truly respected suggested that she pursue mental health counseling, it made so much sense.

NFSB Expands Internship Program to Support Increased Demand for Services

During the past two years, Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB) has introduced new programs and initiatives to meet growing demand for mental health counseling and social services in our community.

The journey has been rewarding, but It hasn’t been easy.

“Our staff was stretched very thin and, as a nonprofit, our budget is tight,” said Katherine Carmichael, Executive Director of NFSB. “NFSB already had a successful clinical internship program that dates back to the 1920s, but we had to find more resources to help our managers of other programs meet the needs of our clients.”
