Black History Month

February 1 marks the beginning of Black History Month. This month, we will learn, celebrate, and honor the contributions and achievements of African American women in STEM to create awareness about how we can learn from our past to create a more equitable future..

Check out these resources that serve to promote Black youth and the experiences of Black women STEM professionals:

• 13 Black Women in STEM You Should Know. Explore this list, curated by GoldieBlox, of 13 Black women in STEM that are paving the way for others.
• 16 Black History Month STEM Activities. iD Tech has created a list of 16 STEM activities for youth to help them learn about contributions of Black scientists and STEM professionals.
• The IF/THEN Collection includes Black women STEM professionals from diverse fields. Use this digital library of photos, videos, posters, and activities to integrate Black women STEM role models into programming – all resources are available for educational and other non-commercial use.

The Black Girls Create Project: A Pilot Culturally Responsive Informal STEM Learning Program

Black Girls Create is a culturally responsive STEM program that seeks to increase underserved girls' interest and confidence in science and math. The program model encourages the use of social history, culturally responsive instruction, mentorship from young, diverse scientific role models, and the development of transferable STEM skills through design and digital fabrication. IF/THEN® Collection

Celebrate Engineers Week with Mission Unstoppable and the IF/THEN® Collection.

Did you know that you can make a radioactive particle detector out of household products? Nuclear Engineer Dr. Ciara Sivels teaches us how! Dr. Sivels is a nuclear engineer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, where she works on a variety of projects using radiation detection and modeling. She was the first Black woman to earn a PhD in nuclear engineering from the University of Michigan. Learn more about Dr. Sivels.

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

DiscoverE’s Girl Day is a time when volunteers, educators, and others act as role models, facilitate engineering activities, and show girls how engineers change our world. DiscoverE’s Despite the Odds research found that this simple formula helps girls develop an interest in engineering, build their confidence in their problem-solving skills, and creates a STEM identity. Quantum To-Go

Quantum To-Go's goal is to inspire students of all ages to pursue quantum science and technology careers by matching classrooms with quantum professionals. In honor of World Quantum Day, the American Physical Society is celebrating all April-long with these virtual classroom visits. This classroom experience with a quantum professional will provide early exposure to science and build excitement among students to discover more.The deadline to sign up is March 11, 2024. National Fluid Power Association Scholarship

The National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) offers two different scholarships to students interested in fluid power education. With nearly 300 companies in their membership, the NFPA is a trade association serving manufacturers of fluid power (hydraulic and pneumatic) components and systems, their distributors, suppliers, and related educators.

2024 NFPA Fluid Power Scholarship – multiple $2,000.00 scholarships are awarded to high school seniors and students enrolled at community colleges, technical colleges, and universities to pursue their interests in fluid power. Application deadline is April 1, 2024.

2024 NFPA Robotics Challenge Scholarship – one $30,000.00 scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who participates in a FIRST® Robotics, National Robotics League, or VEX Robotics Competition Team and uses fluid power in their robot. The money awarded is used to study engineering at any accredited technical college or university in the U.S. Application deadline is May 5, 2024.

EarthEcho International: OurEcho Challenge

EarthEcho International’s OurEcho Challenge is open for entries. The OurEcho Challenge STEM competition empowers and engages young changemakers (ages 13-16 in the U.S.) in understanding and restoring the amazing diversity of species essential for the future of our planet. Teams identify threats to natural resources in their communities, develop an innovative solution, and create an action plan in the form of a sustainable process or prototype. Learn more.
