How Montessori Materials Help Lay the Foundation for Girls in STEM
How can we better prepare girls to thrive in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)? It starts much earlier than robotics clubs in middle school. The foundation for curiosity, confidence, and problem-solving is often laid in early childhood through play.
Read our guest blog from Montessori educator Barbara Stein to learn how Montessori classrooms provide children with hands-on opportunities to develop STEM skills through inquiry, discovery, and creation.

Did you know that in-person and remote (online) informal education programs can positively impact girls’ attitudes towards science?
A recent study by Leventhal, Li, Sullivan, and Regan (2024) explored the impacts of four instructional formats (in-person at school, in-person at a museum, remote (online) from home, and remote (online) from school) of The Girls at the Museum Exploring Science program for elementary- aged girls from underrepresented groups. The results?
✨The in-person and remote programs that took place outside of school settings had greater positive impacts on girls’ attitudes towards science than programs that took place inside of schools.
🚀Participants from all instructional formats used more technical language in their post-program survey responses than in their pre-program responses, indicating increased comfort with scientific concepts.
This research highlights how in-person and remote (online) community engagement programs can positively impact attitudes towards science for girls from underrepresented groups. Remote programs can reach more participants in rural areas or areas with less direct access to science resources.
