The Power of Partnership through Technology

30 January 2023

11.00 AM -12.00 PM (NY EST) via Zoom

Technology is a tool that can be used to extend and enhance our civil society community. It is important to understand the nature, capabilities, and benefits of these tools to be used with a thoughtful strategy. Recently, the President of the General Assembly reminded us that all development must be data-driven.

The Global NGO Executive Committee (GNEC) is contributing to the vision of data-driven results in ways that will positively affect all NGOs associated with UN Department of Global Communications (DGC).

GNEC views empowering civil society as its main goal and wants to facilitate opportunities for the NGO community to affect change with a powerful and unified voice. Never before has power of collaboration been as strong as it is today, harnessing our collective energy with new ways to access, compile, and use data to bring us together, imply cooperation, and potentially identify funding for the future. Using big data, civil society at the UN can remain relevant, in touch, and actively pursue new challenges and score new successes.

Developing technology will be introduced that will enable our NGOs to have greater impact and achieve our missions and goals with big data. Alone we can do some, but together we can make great things happen. Join us and our intergenerational panel of technology experts to learn how using big data and virtual education can enable us to achieve our goals.

WHAT IS FISCAL AGENCY & HOW CAN IT HELP YOUR NGO?

Some NGOs are familiar with this helpful tool; to others it may be a new topic. At this critical moment in re-establishing civil society’s administration and management, this assistance could be critical.

Do you need help to accept or manage a large grant, donation, or sponsorship? 'Fiscal agency or sponsorship' can help. And, GNEC can help your NGO with that.

Nonprofits choose fiscal agency for a variety of reasons, including uncertainty over whether their organization will find long-term success, lack of administrative know-how of their leaders, or the visibility and security for the donor that affiliation with another nonprofit provides.

GNEC now provides this as a new service to the UN DGC Associated NGOs it serves - and several DGC NGO constituents have begun to invite GNEC into their process through fiscal agency.

GNEC can also act as a "back-office" manager in charge of accepting and disbursing grant, sponsor, or donor funds for the NGO, while the grantee maintains full control of the project.

For new nonprofit groups, a "fiscal sponsor" acts in much the same way, except that the fiscal sponsor may also facilitate other aspects of the project in the name of the NGO. Also, contributions to the fiscal sponsor are eligible for income tax deductions, while those made to a fiscal agent for established nonprofit organizations are generally tax deductible through the primary NGO. In the established NGO case, the fiscal agent is more akin to external administrative support.

In most cases, GNEC will agree to accept a fiscal sponsor role assisting UN DGC-associated NGOs with specific fiscal agency as required by the NGO, donor, and project, thereby adding a higher level of transparency and accountability to larger grant allocations as well as projects for new NGOs, or newer areas of concern for our more established constituents.

IF YOUR NGO HAS AN ISSUE RECEIVING, ACCEPTING, OR ADMINISTRATING A LARGE GRANT OR OTHER, SIMILAR ISSUES WITH DONORS, PLEASE ASK ABOUT THIS NEW GNEC SERVICE FOR ALL ASSOCIATED NGOs. SEND CONSULTATION REQUESTS TO: PRESIDENT@GNEC.NGO

One of the struggles of NGOs, especially smaller NGOs, is the ability to keep up with the pace of change. Jevons Paradox creates an issue where we need more technology resources as we become more efficient at using the current apps, tools, …. Many of us have the experience of finally making the time to learn a skill, use a tool, embrace a new social media site, … only to have it become “old-school”, eliminated by a corporate decision, or not updated for current operating systems. This article hopes to present some of the emerging technologies and how they might be useful for NGOs.

On the occasion of the World Interfaith Harmony Week, the Journalists and Writers Foundation organizes a virtual panel discussion "The Role of Inter-religious Initiatives in Reconciliation and Peacebuilding" on February 2, 2023 Thursday at 11:00 AM.

Around the world, interfaith initiatives carried out by various civil society organizations, sometimes also promoted by governments or international organizations, help to establish networks of reconciliation and containment in contexts of conflict and often establish the necessary dialogues for peace building. This panel seeks to shed light on the work that various interfaith leaders are doing on the ground to create communities and environments of peace. More information HERE

About the fellowship. It provides an opportunity for a graduate student who is an ethnic minority to work on public policy issues in Washington, DC for an entire summer.

The Dalmas A Taylor Memorial Summer Minority Policy Fellowship honors the memory of Dalmas A. Taylor, who passed away during his term as President of SPSSI. Dr. Taylor had been involved for many years with SPSSI. In addition, he was instrumental in establishing the Minority Fellowship at APA and in increasing APA’s attention to inclusion of people of color. This fellowship is administered in conjunction with APA and its Minority Fellowship Program.

Eligibility. Applicants must be currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited doctoral program in psychology or a related field. In addition, they must be a member of an ethnic minority group (including, but not limited to, African American, Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian American, Latinx, and Pacific Islander) and/or have demonstrated a commitment to a career with a focus on ethnic minority issues. Applicants should not have completed their doctoral program by the time they begin the fellowship.

Award. The summer fellowship is a full-time commitment and runs 8-12 weeks. While the timing is flexible, we recommend that the fellow aim to begin the fellowship no later than mid-June (as most of Washington goes on vacation in August). The summer stipend is $3,000. The fellow also attends the SPSSI Summer Conference and the week-long APA Minority Fellowship Program Summer Psychology Institute free of charge. SPSSI will reimburse the fellow up to $1,500 for relocation to DC and/or living expenses in DC. (Note: The fellow will be responsible for making their own housing arrangements.)

How to apply. Applicants are asked to submit a cover page, personal statement, two letters of recommendation, and curriculum vitae. In the personal statement, which should be no more than 1,000 words, applicants are asked to include: a) the reason for their interest in this fellowship; b) their current and previous research and experiences; c) an indication of their interest in ethnic minority psychological issues; and d) a statement of how this fellowship would contribute to their career goals.

Historical Reference Noted

Exhaustive investigations demonstrate that a Volume of the NGO Reporter, under Founder and long-time Editor Dorrie Weiss, was in its fifth year in 1997. Begun in 1992, then, that would make 2023 its 32nd consecutive year of publication. Its free subscriber list includes NGO leaders associated with UN DGC (see above), as well as UN and other media, and all those interested in UN-related, NGO activities at UNHQ and worldwide. We feature items & events created or promoted by GNEC, its editor, staff, and of course, the UN DGC-associated NGOs across the globe.

Prior to her passing, Ms. Weiss mentored Patrick, as Editor, and later invited Dr. Lester Wilson onboard. They became its co-editors for nearly two decades, assisted in large measure by the dearly departed Joan Levy, and former site manager Isaac Humphries. To all our volunteers we remain eternally grateful.
