Curriculum Project at NHCC
NHCC’s Art Curriculum & Digitization Project has been underway since March 2019 thanks to AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). Working with the History & Literary Arts department, three full-time VISTA members have been learning about the Center, its community, and education in New Mexico. The large-scale goal of VISTA is to help end poverty, and for the NHCC that means creating and providing access to culturally relevant education resources with the goal of raising student outcomes. VISTA members have been actively engaged in local events, developing curriculum, and creating a new website to host digital material. The current focus of the project is the fresco Mundos de Mestizaje.

Recently, VISTA members hosted a workshop for the Student Leadership Institute as part of the La Cosecha Dual Language Conference. The session focused on exploring Mundos de Mestizaje in relation to identity, leadership, and history. Students created identity maps through the art of collage which will be on display during the first annual NHCC History Festival scheduled for February 21-22, 2020.

Festival Ballet Albuquerque is partnering with the National Hispanic Cultural Center to present an original production,  The Nutcracker in the Land of Enchantment . The beloved holiday classic is transported to territorial New Mexico in the late 1800s, with added elements of the state’s heritage and traditions including Spanish dancers, southwestern snakes, sheep and shepherdesses, a lively fandango, a storyteller doll with children, and lavish western Victorian-era costumes. Now in its seventh year at the NHCC, the production showcases New Mexico heritage and traditions while maintaining the classical grace and family appeal of its origins. A live orchestra performs under the baton of Maestro Guillermo Figueroa, former music director of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.
