The Promise of New Beginnings
Welcome to the September 2017 edition of New Directions! New Deans, students, faculty, friends, classes, and leadership positions are all promises for a new beginning. Sometimes all you need is an opportunity, fresh breath of gentle air or the budding of a new plant on a cool fall day to feel rejuvenated and alive after a long hot summer spell. We hope you are rejuvenated and excited as you prepare to continue your leadership responsibilities in education, research, practice and policy.
The NHCGNE has many new beginnings as we commence our search for a new Executive Director and bid, anew, a fond farewell to J Taylor Harden, PhD, RN, FGSA, FAAN! Dr. Harden has been a strategic leader as we have moved from Building Academic Gerontological Nursing Capacity to the National Hartford Center for Gerontological Nursing as a new 501c3. We thank her for the time, energy, strategic planning and determination that has resulted in the journey we are now on. We wish her only the best as she moves into the next phase of her life
We look forward to the promise of new beginnings as we welcome: (1) NHCGNE new Education Committee Chair, Dr. Lisa Skemp, Loyola University, Chicago; (2) NHCGNE new Awards Committee Chair, Dr. Wendy Duggleby, University of Alberta; and (3) all new committee members that signed on in San Francisco! If you are interested in supporting NHCGNE, and would like to join one of our committees, please email Julie Utano. Committee involvement will expand your network, help strengthen your profession, and provide you with an opportunity to directly impact gerontological nursing. Please consider signing up.
We hope you enjoy this edition and are successful in your new beginnings.

The Pennsylvania State University seeks candidates for the position of Dean of the College of Nursing. The dean serves as the college’s principal academic and administrative officer and reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost of the University. The position requires an individual who can lead effectively and manage a cutting-edge, rapidly growing academic unit in a multidisciplinary and highly interdisciplinary research university. The dean will work closely with administrators at campuses throughout the state to oversee baccalaureate nursing programs (currently offered at 10 campuses).
Penn State’s College of Nursing is among the top schools of nursing in the country in NIH funding, with a 2016–17 operating budget of $8.4 million and a robust program of research in such areas as palliative and end-of-life care, geriatrics and gerontology, dementia and delirium, child and adolescent health, and organizational change in complex systems. In 2007, the college became home to one of nine national Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence selected and funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation to promote the education of high-quality geriatric nursing leaders. Interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities exist with several Penn State colleges and academic centers, including the
Child Maltreatment Solutions Network
. In addition, the College of Nursing is a co-leader in the Penn State
Clinical and Translational Science Institute
.
