Welcome Back from the President
At last, we are transitioning to my favorite time of the year. The autumnal equinox will take place in a few weeks, marking the end of summer and the start of fall across the Northern Hemisphere. Across the north, people are beginning to feel a crisp in the evening air. The trees are preparing to bestow us with their explosive colors we enjoy so much each year. Simultaneously, our members in other parts of the world are moving into summer once again. I am filled with gratitude and excitement about the growth and trajectory of the NHCGNE! We have moved from the dreams of the directors in the nine Hartford Centers for Gerontological Nursing Excellence, the Coordinating Center and the Reynolds Center for Gerontological Nursing Excellence to a 501c3 with just under 60 national and international members. The incredible contributions made by the members to advance the work of the NHCGNE is nothing short of spectacular.
I am inspired by the commitment of the leadership to explore new ways of strengthening our gerontological faculty throughout the country and international, to impact our student’s knowledge about the care of older adults.
- Through the leadership of Jean Wyman, we have established Distinguished Educator in Gerontological Nursing Program and to date we have 34 applications to seek this recognition. Lisa Ship chairs the Education Committee and many activities are in motion that will result in moving forward one of the major initiatives of the NHCGNE.
- Thanks to the leadership of Ann Kolanowski, the NHCGNE has been awarded a grant from the Recall Foundation that provides the opportunity to develop gerontological nursing and leadership content that will be provided to nurse managers in the VA community-based facilities. The work developed by the grant will be products of the NHCGNE and is a step toward making those products available nursing homes throughout the country.
Our progress is realized because of the investment of time our members nationally as well as internationally are able to provide to advance the mission and vision of the NHCGNE. Thank you to everyone and I look forward to visiting with each of you at the Leadership Conference in Boston in November.

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science
Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) is a private, nonprofit, community-founded, student-centered university committed to cultivating diverse health professional leaders who are dedicated to social justice and health equity for underserved populations through outstanding education, clinical service and community engagement. CDU is also a leader in health disparities research with a focus on education, training, treatment and care in cancer, diabetes,
cardiometabolics
and HIV/AIDS.
In the five decades since the school was incorporated in the Watts-Willowbrook area of Los Angeles in 1966, CDU has graduated more than 575 physicians, 1,200 physician assistants and over a thousand other health professionals, as well as training over 2,700 physician specialists through its sponsored residency programs. Its School of Nursing has graduated over 1000 nursing professionals, including more than 600 family nurse practitioners.
CDU has earned designation as a minority-serving institution by the U.S. Office for Civil Rights, and is recognized by the Department of Education (DOE) under Title III B as a Historically Black Graduate Institution (HBGI). The University is also a member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.
Over 70 percent of graduates since 2000 are from underrepresented backgrounds: CDU is the second most diverse four-year private nonprofit college in the nation, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education (August 2017). In fact, a California Wellness Foundation report estimated that one‐third of all minority physicians practicing in Los Angeles County, are graduates of the CDU medical school and/or residency training programs. And more than 80 percent of CDU students report returning to practice and provide much-needed care in underserved communities following graduation.
CDU has evolved and grown, shaped by the needs of the community it serves. The institution benefits from its location and the corresponding diversity and complexity of its population by creating an academic environment unlike any other that features the “CDU Advantage,” a curriculum based on five specific pillars—research, social justice, international exposure, experiential education, and health policy—that gives CDU graduates both solid preparation to practice in their chosen field of healthcare, and a true understanding of health disparities, health policy and social justice.
The University is named after Dr. Charles R. Drew, a brilliant, pioneering African-American physician who overcame long odds and racism in the early and mid-20th century to produce seminal work on blood banking and blood plasma storage and transfusion. He was also a distinguished surgeon and chair of surgery at Howard University. His dedication to learning and sharing knowledge to benefit mankind is the inspiration for the University.
CDU strives to improve the health status of underserved communities through innovative biomedical research and progressive health policies. By maintaining and expanding relationships with local health professions schools, research institutions and community-based organizations, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science strives to eliminate health disparities by providing access to and delivery of healthcare services to underserved populations.

NHCGNE's Annual Leadership Conference Is Coming to Boston!
It's time to sign up for the 2018 NHCGNE Leadership Conference. This year we are excited to announce that the meeting will take place at an NHCGNE member's campus -
Northeastern University
. This will mark the first time that we are hosting this event at a member site, and we couldn't be more excited.
The number of individuals in the world who are over the age of 65 is growing astronomically and is projected to double by 2050. Older adults represent 13% of the current world population. We need to make sure that there are systems in place to ensure that they are allowed to age with dignity and with support. Appropriately, the curricula presented at t he 2018 NHCGNE Leadership Conference will center around our theme:
Thriving Together As We Age: Older Adults and their Caregivers
The objectives of the conference are to:
- Communicate and disseminate advances in the multi-disciplinary knowledge of aging, diversity, and caregiving for Persons with Dementia (PWD) to the research community.
- Increase collaboration between senior and junior scholars studying interventions for caregivers of PWDs and those with other disabling conditions related to aging.
- Enhance research collaboration among junior and senior researchers on the topic of caregiving.
- Supplement clinician knowledge on diverse caregiving needs and resources.
- Communicate and disseminate knowledge on technology to enhance family care for PWD and others with disabling conditions related to aging.

It's not just nurses; NHCGNEs Leadership= Conference is interprofessional in nature, with social workers, psychologists, doctors and more as speakers and attendees. There is real opportunity for collaboration.

Check Out This Great Read!
NHCGNE has picked their "Read of the Month"! We find great articles on nursing for you!
This article outlines the characteristics of an effective leader, the political context and various leadership activities for senior nurses. It also discusses mentorship, different leadership models and the process of professional socialisation.
For the purposes of this article, senior nurses are defined as practitioners with additional post-qualification education, skills and experience who work within the nursing team providing a day-to-day, hands-on, visible presence.
Leadership can be defined as a multifaceted process of identifying a goal or target, motivating other people to act, and providing support and motivation to achieve mutually negotiated goals (Porter-O’Grady, 2003). In the daily life of a senior nurse, this could refer to coordinating the day/night shift and the team of nurses and support staff on duty under the direction of that nurse. The successful operation of the shift, staff morale and managing difficult or challenging situations depends largely on the senior nurse’s leadership skills.
