The House of Representatives passed a stopgap funding bill on December 9 that would give lawmakers one week to avoid a government shutdown later this month. The Senate must pass the continuing resolution and President Trump must sign it by Friday to avoid a government shutdown, which both are expected to do.
Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced on December 10 a legislation to provide a second round of stimulus checks to most Americans as Congressional leadership continues to negotiate a larger coronavirus relief package.
NHMA congratulates California Attorney General Xavier Becerra for being selected by President-Elect Biden to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NHMA encourages its members to check the Plum Book for political positions in the new Administration and send your letter of interest and CV to erios@nhmamd.org and to the Biden Transition: buildbackbetter.com
NHMA joined national advocacy groups in a letter to Senate and House Leadership calling for action that any coronavirus stimulus or recovery package in the future needs to reduce pollution, protect public health, correct inequity linked to environmental injustice and health disparities, and to address the climate crisis. Read the letter here.

President's Blog: Plan for Your Family’s Caregiving Needs
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our communities across the United States with three times the cases and five times the hospitalizations among Hispanics compared to non-Hispanic white persons.
This new disease causes fatigue, fevers, chills, diarrhea and perhaps loss of taste or smell for several days in some persons, but more serious symptoms are lung damage and shortness of breath, clots in the vascular system, heart attacks, and strokes. Some people get so sick that they are admitted to hospitals for medical care treatments, including ventilators to help the lungs breathe.
Caregivers are friends or family members who drive their ill parent to the lab or to visit the doctor or dentist. Caregiving can be buying groceries, getting medicines, helping with finances or doing chores around the house. In the Latino family, we are all family caregivers at one time or another. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in six Hispanic adults are caregivers, 58 percent of whom are women, and over half assist with personal care. Read more here.

HIV Clinical Fellowship Awards – Apply by Jan. 19, 2021
HIVMA and the IDSA Foundation are accepting applications for the 2021 HIV Clinical Fellowship Program. For the first time, the program is supporting one year of HIV clinical training for full or half-time effort awards to allow greater flexibility for physicians to train in community-based settings. The award supports a stipend of $33,000 for half-time training or $65,000 for full-time, plus funding to cover fringe benefits. Up to an additional $10,000 is available to support educational opportunities or to offset training site administrative costs. Physicians whose communities are underrepresented in medicine or who interested in working in the Southeastern United States are strongly encouraged to apply. Program and application requirements are on the HIVMA website, including recommended competencies for fellowship training. The deadline to apply is Jan. 19, 2021. Contact HIVMA to learn more.

NHMA-AAOA Opioid Toolkit
The National Hispanic Medical Association recently partnered with Allied Against Opioid Abuse to release a new suite of resources to help educate the Hispanic community about the rights, risks and responsibilities associated with prescription opioids. The toolkit was developed by an advisory committee of NHMA members and features three downloadable and printable resources available in both Spanish and English. Along with the toolkit resources, we released an informational Spanish-language video providing key insights on safe prescription opioid use from NHMA physicians. Our partnership with AAOA aims to increase awareness among Hispanics about prescription opioid safety, safe storage and disposal and alternative pain management options by providing resources for healthcare providers to easily share with their patients. We encourage you to share the resources and video with your patients and colleagues.
