Legislative Update
NHMA will work with Congress to offset the Trump administrations FY 2021 Budget, which was announced this week. It proposes long- and short-term cuts slashing the budgets of healthcare agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, the CDC, CMS, HRSA, and AHRQ. Read more ...

On January 27, the U.S. Supreme Court issued an order that allows the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's public charge regulations to take effect, except in Illinois. U.S. Citizens and Immigration Services announced that applications and petitions file or submitted electronically on or after February 24, 2020 will be under the new regulations. The regulations will add non-cash benefits such as health, nutrition, and housing benefits to the public charge assessment.

NHMA signed on to the following letters in January 2020:
  • NHMA joined other Partnership for Medicaid members to request the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare to withdraw its new proposed rule, Medicaid Program: Medicaid Fiscal Accountability Regulation. Read the letter, here.
  • NHMA sent letters to Attorney General James from New York and Attorney General Becerra from California to express support for the T-Mobile Sprint merger. This merger would benefit the health and well-being of Hispanic and underrepresented communities by powering revolutionary medical technologies that depend on access to reliable high-speed broadband services. Dr. Vincent Guilamo-Ramos Appointed to the U.S. Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA)
ADM Brett P. Giroir, the Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, swears in Dr. Vincent Guilamo-Ramos as a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS.

Featured Announcements
The  All of Us Research Program is a momentous effort funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to advance individualized prevention, treatment, and care for all people of backgrounds. The program’s aim is to enroll 1 million or more volunteers and receive sample from communities who have been underrepresented in research, making the program the largest and most diverse resource of its kind. We are seeking physicians and health care providers that treat Hispanic/Latinx patients to create a short video on the importance of getting the seasonal influenza vaccine, and physicians and providers treating Hispanic/Latinx patients with HIV to create a short video on the importance of HIV prevention/treatment.

Volunteer to teach health workers abroad! You can improve global health by sharing your skills and knowledge with colleagues overseas. Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) is seeking volunteers for short-term (1-4 week) assignments in Central and South America Projects include:
  • oral surgery and hematology in Peru;
  • dermatology and internal medicine (including sub-specialists) in Costa Rica; and
  • oncology in Honduras.
**We'd like to send a reminder urging our members and partners to complete a 2020 Census form online or by mail or phone, by April 1. No responses will receive a home visit follow-up from late April to early July 2020.
