Aging with HIV: Surviving Another Pandemic in the Latino Community

COVID-19 Virtual Briefing Series Session 12: Impact on Pregnant Women, Mothers, and Children

The Pfizer Vaccine's U.S. Medical Affairs team will be hosting “Medical Updates: Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, also known as COMIRNATY® (COVID-19 Vaccine, mRNA),” on Tuesdays, at 5 p.m. ET and Thursdays at 12 p.m. ET for the remainder of 2021.

These sessions will be continuously updated to reflect new information and changes that evolve. Such updates will be identified at the start of each session and further explained during each presentation. 

The topics for the current sessions, subject to change, include:  
  • FDA approval in individuals 16 years of age and older 
  • Third dose authorization for immunocompromised persons
  • Packaging update 
  • Shelf-life extension and temperature range  
  • Storage, handling & administration. 
NHMA-NIDDK/NIH Academic Career Development Workshop.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and NHMA hosts a one day workshop with travel awards to participate in the NIDDK Academic Career Development Workshop. Participants are senior residents, fellows, and junior faculty within 3 years of completion of fellowship who are interested in pursuing careers in biomedical research and/or academic medicine. Participants are also encouraged to attend the NHMA Annual Conference on March 24-27, 2022. Application Deadline: January 7, 2022
"The CDC noted that a recent study found that more than 88,000 prescriptions for ivermectin had been dispensed in the week ending August 13, a 24-fold increase from pre-pandemic prescriptions for the dewormer, which averaged 3,600 prescriptions per week from March 16, 2019 through March 13, 2020." NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRP) Application Cycle Opens on September 1!

Have you thought about applying for an NIH Extramural LRP award? Do you know someone that should? Awardees can receive up to $100,000 of qualified educational debt repayment with a two-year contract.

NHMA President's Legislative Update
Colleagues,

President Biden and Federal Government announces new comprehensive strategies and policies to combat COVID-19 with the goal of getting more people vaccinated and protecting those still at risk.

Policies included:
  • Requiring vaccinations for all federal workers and federal contractors
  • Requiring all employers with 100+ employees to have their employees vaccinated or submit to weekly testing
  • Providing easy access to booster shots for COVID-19 vaccines
  • Calling on all states to adopt vaccine requirements for all schools
  • Continuing to require masking for interstate travel and doubling fines for those who fail to mask
  • New support for small businesses affected by the pandemic
  • Increasing support for hospitals over burdened by COVID-19 patients

CVD Education Campaign
NHMA has partnered with Amgen to coordinate two Policy Summits on heart disease prevention and workforce. NHMA continues the cardiovascular disease and Hispanics education project.
Influenza Campaign
NHMA is continuing to expand the health communications campaign to improve influenza vaccination rates for adult Hispanics in partnership with Sanofi to encourage the administration of the influenza vaccines.

On Sept. 1st, NHMA Board Member Diana Ramos, MD spoke at The Future Forward: National Convening of Equity-Centered Women’s Wellness. She participated in the session, Windows of Opportunity for Improving Care for Women, which hosted a candid conversation about levers for change and what needs to happen to push them forward.

Through an award provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) is partnering with the American Medical Association’s Center for Health Equity to fund a total of two million dollars to be distributed among 10-15 physician-led practices from November 1, 2021 – July 31, 2022 to implement strategies that center equity and aim to improve the health of communities (i.e., BIPOC, LGBTQ+, AAPI, people with disabilities, and other minoritized groups) disproportionately affected by COVID-19, particularly those at increased risk due to social and economic circumstances (i.e., predominantly low-income, Medicaid or uninsured, underinsured, immigrant, rent-burdened, unstably housed, etc.).
