WELCOME TO THE NHS WALES
DIGITAL NURSING
NEWSLETTER
This newsletter will help keep stakeholders informed of the standardisation and digitisation of nursing documentation in NHS Wales, as well as updates concerning the digital applications that nursing will be using.
A message from the Chief nursing Officer

As the Chief nursing Officer I am delighted to see the progress across the NHS in Wales with supporting a National digital approach to undertaking in patient nursing assessments.
This has been such a positive and proactive all Wales approach, and I look forward to the remaining health boards and trusts implementing the WNCR and this service being considered business as usual; what an achievement that will be and one to celebrate.
I know the team are continuing work on further standardisation of documents and I am grateful to all those involved. This work is so important and will enhance the quality of service provision with assessment data availability across the health care system supporting better decision-making and ultimately better quality of care for patients. So many opportunities to explore with the wider nursing digital system alignment.
Digital technology has been fundamental in our response to the pandemic and with the pace around this we are in an ideal position for our profession to influence the priorities as leaders in this space.
As we are now into the third year dealing with the extraordinary impact that the pandemic continues to have across the system and indeed our lives, I am so very grateful to everyone who has been involved with supporting the introduction of the WNCR and making digital nursing records a reality. I was really pleased to have had an opportunity to see this “live” in Cwm Taf recently and grateful to Christian Smith for the demonstration. The enthusiasm from those using the system is infectious.
Having a national approach with the digitisation of nursing records is invaluable, as is having a clear development plan for our nursing and midwifery workforce in specialist digital skills and clinical informatics roles. These priorities have my full support and commitment as CNO. Thank you all for everything you have done and continue to do at pace and I look forward to the ongoing success with this work.

Welsh Nursing Care Record research and evaluation

Bangor University are supporting the review and evaluation of WNCR.
The evaluation will explore the impacts of the WNCR which is funded by the Chief Nursing Officer for Wales and the Director of Technology, Digital and Transformation Welsh Government.
The evaluation will be completed by Lois Wiggins who currently works as Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board as a Continuing Healthcare Coordinator within the Mental Health and Learning Disability Division.

She qualified as Registered Nurse Learning Disability and with a Bachelor of Nursing from Bangor University in 2018 and successfully applied to complete a Masters by Research as part of a clinical academic programme at Bangor University in partnership with Digital Health and Care Wales.

During the evaluation, Lois will be looking at information already gathered by Digital Health and Care Wales and early feedback from users of the WNCR.

In addition, Lois will be engaging with representatives from different Health Boards and setting up forums to further explore user experience of the WNCR.

Welsh Intensive Care Information System (WICIS)

The Welsh Intensive Care Information System is currently in development with health boards across Wales.
There will be a new digital solution to replace paper charts and the hand-written observations that are used to record vital life signs. The Grange University Hospital Intensive Care Unit in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board will be the first of all 14 Welsh adult critical care units to adopt the new digital service.

The new fully-managed digital solution is capable of replacing all existing charts. It will collect real-time information automatically from the monitoring devices, pumps and respiratory equipment used for each patient’s care, providing easy access to vital data and insights, giving frontline staff a quick and clear overview of the status of patients and devices across the ward.

With more than 10,000 people admitted for critical care in Welsh hospitals each year combined with increasing pressure on intensive care, digital enhancement of Intensive Care Units will improve care by streamlining processes, providing vital clinical information and saving nursing staff from documenting at the bedside.

If you would like more information on the programme you can head to the dedicated webpage, or you can email Geraint.Walker@wales.nhs.uk.
Welsh Community Care Information System (WCCIS)

Welsh Government has endorsed a strategy of closer working between Health and Social Care services and the desire to support more people at home.
Policy and strategic documents such as the Social Care and Wellbeing Act (2014), Delivering Integrated Health and Social Care (2013), have consistently identified the need for better coordinated and integrated Social Care and Health services.

To support this, Local Authorities from across Wales have worked with NHS Wales organisations to specify and select a single Welsh Community Care Information System (WCCIS) for Social Care, Community and Childrens nursing Health, Mental Health and Therapy Services, across organisational and geographical boundaries.

If you would like more information about the programme please contact Barry.Morgan2@wales.nhs.uk for details about mental health services and Abigail.Swindail3@wales.nhs.uk, for community and children’s nursing.

Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA) is the next new digital programme that will digitise the prescribing and the medicines administration process within hospital settings it will support:

• Safer medication prescribing and medication administration
• Efficient medicines business processes, such as medicines reconciliation and verification, and include the 5 rights of medicines administration
• Replacing the paper medicines chart

Nursing requirements have been gathered via various workshop events and watch out for more news as we progress.
