Today we celebrate the NHSBCA Assistant Regional Coaches of the Year Sponsored by Jostens.
The NHSBCA would like to congratulate the eight award winners. Special thanks also to the NHSBCA Coach of the Year Committee members for all their efforts. All eight award winners will be recognized at the NHSBCA Convention in Scottdale, Arizona, on December 2nd-5th.
Now that the MLB draft has ended, our NHSBCA All-Region and All-American committee will be formulating their selections to be ready for national publication. We want to thank the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches. Historian Dave Johnson sent us this piece of information about the MLB draft.
"There have been 75,287 total players selected from all sources (high school, college, and no school). Of that total, 26, 277 were from U.S. high schools, 699 from high schools in American territories, and 493 from non-U.S. high schools.
The average percentage of their draft selections being directly from U.S. high schools for each major league franchise is 35%. The Braves are the most at 42%, and the Giants are the least at 27%. For U.S. high schools, pitchers comprise almost half of the selections (46%), followed by outfielders (19%), shortstops (12%), and catchers (11%).
Of the 26 high schoolers picked #1 overall, ten have been from California, three from Georgia, two each from Florida, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, and one each from Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia. Three of them have been inducted into the Hall of Fame: Harold Baines (1977), Ken Griffey, Jr. (1987), and Chipper Jones (1990).
The following are the number of United States high school selections (26, 277); California tops the list 6061 whereas Wyoming had 11."
